Karate Zone Join our lead ‘Sensei’ (instructor) Meghan Smit, a 5th Dan black belt in JKS, Shotokan karate. M

As a brand-new Karate Dojo, we will join the JKS (Japan Karate Shoto-Renmei) federation with headquarters in Japan through yearly affiliation and we will also look at opportunities for our karateka to compete in the sport-karate fraternities (including JKS competition) where possible and as the belt level reaches the pre-requisites.

A little view from above 👀

Just another session on the mats — working through kata sequence, some bunkai, refining the details and enjoying the process.

This is what we do. 🥋

Last weekend our champs took on the KSA League 1 in the Eastern Cape! What a championship it was!

Congrats to each of our competitors winning 2 Bronze, 1 x Silver, and 4 GOLD medals in elite, development and team event respectively. We didn’t have many competitors from our dojo’s (KarateZone and TUKS karate) but everyone brought home some medals!

Congrats, we are proud of you!

Part 3 — The Knee Lift ⚡

The knee lift is where the speed of your ura-mawashi geri is really created.

It’s not about swinging the lower leg harder — it’s about getting the knee up fast, into the correct position, and then letting the lower leg do the work.

Fast knee → fast kick.

In Part 3, we break down the knee lift, the timing, and why speed starts before the foot ever moves.

Early mornings. Extra work. Bigger goals.

Our competition athletes are putting in the work before the day even gets started — building strength, speed, conditioning and, most importantly, the discipline to keep showing up.

Competition preparation isn’t just about what happens on the day. It’s about everything you’re willing to do when nobody is watching.

The extra sessions start here. The results will show later.

Ura Mawashi Geri – Part 2 🥋

The kick isn’t just about the leg — the hip is where the power starts.

One of the most commonly neglected parts of ura-mawashi geri is the hip action. Get the hip rotation right and suddenly the kick becomes faster, cleaner and far more powerful.

In Part 2, we break down the hip mechanics behind the kick. Don’t just throw the leg — learn to drive it.

A focused session on Jion 🥋

Our junior belts worked through the sequence, while the seniors challenged their tempo, timing and application — finishing with some practical bunkai to bring the kata to life!

Technique. Timing. Understanding. Repetition.

That’s how we build better karateka. 👊
