Juneteenth – June 19, 2026
“Juneteenth is a celebration of progress. It’s an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible—and there is still so much work to do.” — Barack Obama
Juneteenth is more than a holiday—it is a time to reflect, learn, and celebrate. It honors the resilience, strength, and contributions of generations of Black Americans while recognizing the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice.
Although Confederate forces had effectively surrendered in the spring of 1865, slavery remained largely intact in Texas. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced General Orders No. 3, informing enslaved people that they were free. This moment marked a significant step toward fulfilling the promise of freedom for all Americans.
Today, Juneteenth honors Black resilience, acknowledges the delayed arrival of liberty, and celebrates the progress that has been made while recognizing the work that still lies ahead.
“We must always be a strong presence, an unrelenting force working for equality and justice until the freedom gates are fully open.” — Dorothy Height
As we commemorate this day, let us remember the lessons of history, celebrate the achievements of those who came before us, and continue working toward a future where opportunity, dignity, and justice are truly available to all.
“No one is free until we are all free.” — Martin Luther King Jr.
