When most people think of Rio de Janeiro, they’ve already got the picture dialed — beaches, mountains, chaos, beauty. But just offshore… it’s a different world.

Louro Nabuko and his buddy found it the way a lot of good stories start — a random floating tree trunk, drifting in the blue. No reason for it to be there… but every reason to stop. Underneath it, two absolute beasts — mahi just ghosting in the shade, cruising like they owned it. They did it right first. Worked the log. Cast lures. Tried to trigger a reaction. Nothing. Plan B … forget the bait metal shafts for bait. — quiet, direct — šŸ’Æ predator mode.

Two fish.
55 lb and 44 lb of pure, open-ocean muscle.

The best way to safely and confidently get into freediving.

Our next freediving course is May 8–9, followed by an open water session at Anacapa Island on May 17. Space is limited to just 9 divers, so early sign-up is key.

This program provides the training and knowledge needed to safely freedive to depths of 60 feet or more, depending on your experience, with a strong emphasis on safety, comfort, and proper technique.

You’ll learn:
• Essential safety procedures for breath-holding
• Equalization techniques for depth diving
• Freediving and snorkeling equipment
• The physics and physiology of diving — what happens to your body at depth
• Safety and problem management
• Freediving technique development
• Breathing and breath-hold training

Our instructor, Seamus Callham, is a professional freediver who spends multiple days each week in the water — teaching, diving, and spearfishing at a high level.

Cost: $595
Boat (open water day at Anacapa): +$250

Blue Water Hunter is proud to support local artists—and one of our favorites is Jeremy Harper.

Jeremy has been meticulously painting incredible seascapes around Santa Barbara, capturing not just how it looks, but how it feels. His work pulls you right back to those moments—glassy mornings, playful waves, and that unmistakable light reflecting off wet sand.

We live in , and Jeremy captures it in a way that feels both timeless and real.

Come by the shop to check out a collection in person. You might just find the perfect piece for your home, your office—and in the process you will be helping out your neighbor.

Makoa’s been on an absolute tear lately. This is just one example—an absolute fish of a lifetime… and he’s got more where that came from.

The wild part? Caught from shore, right here in Santa Barbara County.

Huge congratulations again—you’re setting the bar high and showing what’s possible. Age isn’t a factor.

Takeaway: you’re definitely not catching this sitting on the couch. Get out there—they’re out there.

Blood lust runs deep in the family…cousins Jeremy Frazier- killer extraordinaire putting the hurt on the tuna with the essential gear. Nice work buddy!!

Normally he’s crawling around the bush dressed in camo sweating, flies in his ears, fight off mountain lions and bagging trophy deer(🦌) or more recently a buffalo!
