If you attempt to steal 3rd with a lefty up you better have an amazing jump and be safe by a mile… Especially with 2 outs.

I know a bunch of people are going to say “bad umpiring” but is a magician with his mitt!

To get pitches 4-5 inches out of the zone called strikes, you gotta be doing something right.

The patience, the quickness, the consistency… This is why he’s leading MLB in receiving runs.

Two things about this throw by Henry Davis, MLB leader in throw out percentage at 40%.

One, this is an example of ZERO tag time. On. The. Bag! 💪

And two, a .60 release time on this pitch location is impressive! When the mitt arm gets fully extended during the reception it typically leads to exchange issues and slows the release process down. Davis wasn’t affected at all.

I had a young catcher I do lessons with ask what he should do when his pitcher spikes a pitch that’s not even close. He said he can never get his body behind the ball.

That’s actually a common misunderstanding. Most of the time with extreme misfires, elite catchers will use their mitt, not their body to stop the ball.

I show and discuss this throw at every camp for two reasons…

One, it’s a textbook example of a “replace step” (right to left & left to target). And two, he’s got amazing tempo during this throw and doesn’t rush. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. He gone!

You want to average a .56 release like Tyler Heineman?

You need to be fluid like water and not have any pause or hesitation anywhere in your throwing motion. Notice how quick his right foot is in the ground and how quick the ball gets out of his mitt…
