The Top 3 Reasons Your Child Should Be Training in Self-Defense at Attitude First

1. Awareness before danger.
Children learn to notice changes in people, surroundings, and situations—and recognize when something does not feel right. Effective self-defense begins long before anyone throws a punch.

2. Confidence they have actually practiced.
We do not simply tell students to “be confident.” They practice setting boundaries, using their voice, managing pressure, making decisions, and taking appropriate action. Confidence is not a slogan; it is developed through experience.

3. The ability to adapt when life does not follow the drill.
Real situations are unpredictable. Our students learn more than memorized techniques—they learn how to recognize what is happening, organize themselves, and choose an effective response.

At Attitude First, self-defense is not about teaching children to be afraid or aggressive. It is about helping them become more aware, capable, and prepared.

Because growing up takes training, and we have been dedicated for more than 40 years of encouraging children to have confidence, commitment and compassion!

We train to go beyond understanding movement; we are training the ability to recognize changing conditions and adapt movement to interact with situations effectively.

This has some important information worth considering—especially when it comes to ADHD and Autism.

At Attitude First Martial Arts Academy, we’ve been working to deepen our understanding of how ADHD and autism can affect attention, communication, sensory processing, learning, movement, and social interaction.

The goal isn’t to simply identify a condition and then lower expectations. In fact, I think that can sometimes do a disservice to the student.

Instead, we want to better understand the individual so we can improve how we teach them.

A student may need information presented differently. They may need more time to process an instruction, more opportunities to move, clearer routines, fewer competing distractions, or another way to demonstrate that they understand.

Different doesn’t necessarily mean less capable. It may mean that our approach needs to become more adaptable.
That is an important responsibility for us as instructors.

Martial arts gives us an incredible environment for developing awareness, coordination, communication, confidence, self-regulation, and adaptability—but only if we are willing to keep learning how to teach the person standing in front of us.

At Attitude First, that is something we are continuing to work on.

Better understanding creates better teaching.
Better teaching creates better opportunities to learn.
