"That was a much needed bounce-back year for Brent Venables, taking control of the defense again. Some of that was just him using that talent and depth up front, disguising blitzes - just chaos. You could damn near smell the passion.

But he had dudes. Lost some dudes to the NFL. They still have David Stone to anchor the middle; he looks like a top 10 pick ... Eli (Bowen) is a game-changer and his brother (Peyton Bowen) was their best player down the stretch, and Courtland Guillory will get in your face...

I really, really like (John) Mateer at quarterback. Obviously, he has to stay healthy, refine some things. But he's really good at making something out of nothing, which is annoying... Overall, I think they'll be close, but I'm not ready to hand them a cigar."

8 years ago today: Kyler Murray was drafted No. 9 overall by the Oakland Athletics.

The selection happened less than 100 days before the start of the 2018 OU football season. Kyler had an incredible season, capped off by winning the Heisman Trophy. He eventually elected to stick to football.

Kyler was then drafted No. 1 overall by the Arizona Cardinals and became the first player to ever be drafted in the first round of the NFL and MLB Draft.
