Yesterday our New Strides family said goodbye to one of our founding members. Our farm dog…Nara 💔

At 13 years old she lived a full life! But we still never get enough time with our dogs 😭

Anyone that has been to the farm in recent years knows sweet Nara. She has been my constant shadow. My velcro dog. My partner in crime. She was always excited to meet anyone that came to the farm with a tail wag. She loved the treats clients brought her. I loved to watch her roll in the grass or watch me ride. And she loved riding around in the gator around the farm.

She was the toughest dog I know and one of the most loyal. And she definitely was the happiest! Her presence on the farm will be missed and there will never be another like her! Thankful for the memories and the gift to steward her life to the very end.

Rest easy sweet Nara! We will miss you forever!

One of the most important things in the world of a horse is their herd. A herd can be 2 or 3 horses or 20 horses. But a horse always needs a companion of some kind when they can have it. The herd is their family and it means safety and protection. Horses in a herd share a bond with one another just like we as humans share a bond within our own families and community.

The herd moves together as one. Sometimes bunched close for safety or to fight off the flies. Sometimes spread apart but almost always within sight or sound of one another. Their family unit is important and they often look for one another and know when a herd member is missing. Even within the herd as a whole you will often see horses break off into pairs. These are the best friends…the physical family…the long term relationships. Just like we have our best friends so do our horses!

There is a hierarchy within the herd. Each member has a role of some kind. There is the leader who keeps everyone in order…who disciplines and also protects. There is the follower who is content to be on the sidelines and follow everyone else’s lead. There may be a youngster who is curious, rambunctious, and needs likes of direction. There may be a bully that harasses and bosses other herd members around. There is often a guide that leads the herd to water and better grazing. And there is the parent/guardian/babysitter that helps teach and offers extra security. Every member of the herd has a role to play just like we each have a role to play in our own communities and within society.

I love that our horses at New Strides get to experience life in a herd. I believe they are happier and healthier for it. To see them together makes me smile. I am so very grateful for this herd and how much they teach me every single day!

He is the cornerstone of our lesson program and a barn favorite. Not to mention my heart horse and favorite coworker! Thankful he arrived in this world 12 years ago ❤️

Well…we have some big news to share! A couple of weeks ago we moved our entire lesson program to a new facility! This was not in the plans for 2026 but sometimes you just have to go with the things that come your way. Finding this place was a real God thing and though we will miss Sweet Acres we are looking forward to all that will come in this new season. We are very thankful to the owners of the new facility for having us and welcoming us so well. Horses have settled in and we are back in the full swing of things with lessons. Here’s to a new chapter in our story at New Strides Horsemanship!!!
