Chess Queen's Club

Chess Queen's Club Fun, high-quality chess classes, camps, tournaments, and workshops for kids and adults in Mountain View and Silicon Valley. I am a former USSR chess champion.

Played in the same team with the world chess champion Garry Kasparov. Lots of people have been asking me for many years to teach their kids to play chess. It is finally happening!

Last Sunday, something happened that made us smile.

Kids arrived excited. Some were nervous. Some were playing in their very first chess tournament.

And by the end?

They were laughing, comparing games, talking about their favorite moves โ€” and asking:

โ€œWhen is the next tournament?โ€ โ™Ÿ๏ธ

That may be our favorite kind of feedback.

Because ๐‚๐ก๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐ฎ๐ž๐ž๐งโ€™๐ฌ ๐‚๐ฅ๐ฎ๐› mini tournaments were created for exactly this reason: to make competition feel exciting โ€” not intimidating. ๐Ÿ’›

A child can lose a game and still play the next round.
Everyone plays all four games.
Players are paired with children doing similarly as the tournament progresses.
No chess rating required.
No US Chess membership.
No chess clocks.

Just real games, real thinking, a little healthy competition โ€” and a room full of kids discovering that chess tournaments can actually be ๐…๐”๐.

Parents told us how much they loved the atmosphere last weekend: organized, welcoming, competitive without being overwhelming. โœจ

Soโ€ฆ weโ€™re doing it again. ๐ŸŽ‰

One of the most rewarding things about teaching chess to children ages 3โ€“5 is watching how quickly โ€œI donโ€™t know chessโ€ turns into ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ in their skills! โ™Ÿ๏ธโค๏ธ

They walk into Chess4Tots Level 1 as complete beginners.

First, they learn the board.
Then the pieces.
Then how each piece moves.
And little by little, something that once looked mysterious begins to make sense.

And then comes that wonderful moment: they are actually playing chess.

At this age, chess is so much more than learning a game. Itโ€™s learning to focus. To recognize patterns. To ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€. To be patient. To try again.

Tiny hands.
Serious concentration.
Very first chess moves. ๐Ÿง’

Parents, can I share something Iโ€™ve learned after teaching hundreds of children?

The ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜ ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป isnโ€™t watching a child learn chess. โ™Ÿ๏ธ

Itโ€™s watching a child ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐˜€.

I see it every week.

A child who whispers, โ€œIโ€™m not good at this.โ€

A few weeks later, that same child is raising their hand, explaining their strategy, and smiling after solving a problem they once thought was impossible. โœจ

Thatโ€™s why Chess Queenโ€™s Club exists.

Yes, we teach chess.

But more importantly, we teach children to slow down before reactingโ€ฆ to think aheadโ€ฆ to recover after mistakesโ€ฆ and to discover that every challenge has another move waiting to be found. ๐Ÿš€

Those lessons stay with them long after the game is over.

If youโ€™re looking for an activity that ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ๐˜€ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ, resilience, and independent thinkingโ€”not just another item on your childโ€™s scheduleโ€”I invite you to explore our new fall classes.

Silicon Valley is racing to build machines that think.

At Chess Queenโ€™s Club, weโ€™re teaching children something just as important:

How to ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐˜€. ๐Ÿง

โ™Ÿ๏ธ LAST CALL, SILICON VALLEY PARENTS

Our most popular beginner series, Chess Starters, begins ๐—ง๐—ข๐—ก๐—œ๐—š๐—›๐—ง in Mountain View.

Designed for children who are learning the gameโ€”or know how the pieces move but cannot yet confidently play a complete game. ๐Ÿ’ก

During this four-week series, students will learn:

โ™› The value and purpose of every piece
โ™› How to build a strong opening
โ™› Whenโ€”and when notโ€”to castle
โ™› How to recognize threats and opportunities
โ™› How to slow down, make a plan and recover after mistakes

Because chess is not merely about raising stronger players.

It is about raising children who ๐Ÿš€

Silicon Valley is racing to build machines that think.

At Chess Queenโ€™s Club, weโ€™re teaching children something just as urgent:

How to ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐˜€. ๐Ÿง

To pause before moving.
To see the board from the other side.
To make a plan.
To change it without panic.
To learn that one bad move does not decide the game.

Chess doesnโ€™t tell children what to think.

It teaches them how.

2. Make one move and capture it in a photo or short video.
3. In your caption, finish this sentence:
โ€œMy next move is ______.โ€
4. Tag ,
5. Challenge two people whose next move you believe in.

The most ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€ a private 45-minute lesson with Chess Queenโ€™s Club founder Tatyana Kanzaveliโ€”a two-time USSR chess champion who once played on the same team as Garry Kasparov. ๐Ÿ†

Entries close Sunday, July 26 at 8 PM PT.
Winner announced Monday, July 27.

The board has 64 squares.
