• For some young chess players, it’s the next tournament.

Of course, there were trophies. 🏆

A place where kids 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 want to put the screen down.

Last Sunday, something happened that made us smile.

Kids arrived excited. Some were nervous. Some were playing in their very first chess tournament.

And by the end?

They were laughing, comparing games, talking about their favorite moves — and asking:

“When is the next tournament?” ♟️

That may be our favorite kind of feedback.

Because 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛 mini tournaments were created for exactly this reason: to make competition feel exciting — not intimidating. 💛

A child can lose a game and still play the next round.
Everyone plays all four games.
Players are paired with children doing similarly as the tournament progresses.
No chess rating required.
No US Chess membership.
No chess clocks.

Just real games, real thinking, a little healthy competition — and a room full of kids discovering that chess tournaments can actually be 𝐅𝐔𝐍.

Parents told us how much they loved the atmosphere last weekend: organized, welcoming, competitive without being overwhelming. ✨

So… we’re doing it again. 🎉

We’re keeping this one to just 18 players so every child gets a 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥, 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥-𝐫𝐮𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

If your child knows how the pieces move, understands check/checkmate, and can play a complete game independently, this could be a wonderful first tournament.

One of the most rewarding things about teaching chess to children ages 3–5 is watching how quickly “I don’t know chess” turns into 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 in their skills! ♟️❤️

They walk into Chess4Tots Level 1 as complete beginners.

First, they learn the board.
Then the pieces.
Then how each piece moves.
And little by little, something that once looked mysterious begins to make sense.

And then comes that wonderful moment: they are actually playing chess.

At this age, chess is so much more than learning a game. It’s learning to focus. To recognize patterns. To 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. To be patient. To try again.

And, perhaps most importantly, to discover the confidence that comes from 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄. 🌟

Seeing that 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in our youngest students is one of my favorite parts of Chess Queen’s Club.

Tonight, we welcome a brand-new group of little beginners to our Chess4Tots Level 1 chess class for ages 3–5 in Mountain View, and I genuinely cannot wait to meet them. 💛

Serious concentration.

Their first chess tournament should make them want a second one. ♟️

That was the idea behind something new we’re trying at Chess Queen’s Club this Sunday.

A real 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 — without the intimidation of a rated tournament.

12 kids.
3 games.
2 hours.
No rating.
No chess clocks. ⏳

Just kids who already know how to play, getting the chance to compete, think, win, lose, recover, shake hands — and discover how much 𝗳𝘂𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘀 can be.

Parents, can I share something I’ve learned after teaching hundreds of children?

The 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 isn’t watching a child learn chess. ♟️

It’s watching a child 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀.

I see it every week.

A child who whispers, “I’m not good at this.”

A few weeks later, that same child is raising their hand, explaining their strategy, and smiling after solving a problem they once thought was impossible. ✨

That’s why Chess Queen’s Club exists.

Yes, we teach chess.

But more importantly, we teach children to slow down before reacting… to think ahead… to recover after mistakes… and to discover that every challenge has another move waiting to be found. 🚀

Those lessons stay with them long after the game is over.
