This dip doesn't look like much on the video. It's about a 3 foot drop, with several large rocks in it. We have been working on how to approach it for several months. After seeing me do it and having walked it many times, she was ready. I think it's time for more challenges.

I’m not only an athlete with the Silicon Valley Triathlon Club, but I also coach their Team Accelerate program. Every year, we run two 12-week programs to prepare our athletes for specific events. This year, our early-season event is the Wildflower Experience, happening the first weekend of May.

Today, at the Endurance Exchange, I had the privilege of listening to an incredible motivational speaker — former professional triathlete and current triathlon coach, Lisa Bentley.

She shared so many powerful takeaways that I couldn’t pick just one that truly resonated with me.

What stood out most was just how much the way you think shapes how you perform. She was truly an inspiration, especially in how intentionally she worked on her mental game.

A few of her quotes:
Reframe the hard days.
Training isn’t just physical — it’s mental.
Every obstacle is an opportunity, depending on how you frame it.
Tough is ONLY mental.
Turn obstacles into success.
Our thoughts govern our physical and emotional state.

And a quote she was given by Terry Fox in 1980 that still sticks with her today:

To make winter training count:

• Build aerobic capacity with consistent, manageable volume
• Clean up movement and technique
• Develop durability with strength and smart load progression
• Improve bike/run efficiency with controlled, repeatable efforts
• Prioritize fueling, sleep, recovery, and routine

How to Train Smart: Make winter training effective, not just busy:

• Follow a clear weekly structure
• Keep easy days easy, quality days intentional
• Track trends, not just distance
• Adjust based on feedback, not guesswork

Offseason isn’t “Off” — it’s just a different kind of work 💥

Offseason = strength season 💪

Time to trade your long rides and tempo runs for barbells and bands.

Why?
🏋🏽‍♀️ Because strong glutes = happy knees.
🏃🏾‍♀️ Because lifting heavy = running light.

Because the only thing better than endurance is durable endurance.

📈 Use the extra time to fix those sneaky weaknesses, build some real power, and give your joints (and brain) a break from the endless swim/bike/run loop.

💭 Bonus: strength training boosts efficiency, prevents injury, improves bone density, and gives your brain a break from the grind.
