Her thought leadership and radical education work centers marginalized and oppressed populations in the United States. in Sociology and a Master of Arts in Social Justice and Community Or

ganizing. She uses her extensive education in combination with her lived experience and ancestral knowledge to interrogate anti-Black ideologies and challenge patriarchal cultural norms. Her incendiary art provides unrelenting socio-political critique and activates liberatory praxis to dismantle systems of oppression. As a public speaker and performer, Nikki's work has been featured on radio, national television, college universities, and at historic performance venues across the country. As a celebration of her work, her likeness has been depicted in public art installations throughout Los Angeles for nearly two decades. The most recent is a Michael Massenburg mosaic commissioned for the Metro Expo. She is a founder and Executive Director of The Interrupt Series, a virtual workshop and lecture program dedicated to producing anti-racism curriculum and providing education and resources to interrupt racism and patriarchy. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Inglewood, California, Nikki resides on unceded Tongva land with her partner and children, where she works to make her ancestors proud and leave a just, equitable society for her descendants.

Let me know, when it comes to racism, which one of these lessons you were you taught as a kid?⁣
⁣
“Be kind.”⁣
⁣
“Treat everyone the same.”⁣
⁣
“Words hurt people.” ⁣
⁣
The fact that these 3 sentences are the full extent of most grown folks’ anti-racism strategy points to the intentional misunderstanding of what racism actually is.⁣
⁣
I blame the dictionary.⁣
⁣
The definition of racism you were handed has an author. It wasn’t anyone the system was built on.⁣
⁣
It was written by the people it was built for, and it shows.⁣
⁣
Because it describes racism as an attitude. ⁣
⁣
Individual. ⁣
⁣
Rare. ⁣
⁣
Correctable with better manners. ⁣
⁣
And conveniently, never them.⁣
⁣
Once racism is a feeling, every conversation about it turns into an argument over whether somebody overreacted, what needs to be forgiven and who should do the forgiving and forgetting.⁣

The definition of racism you were handed was authored by someone.⁣
⁣
How much you want to bet that/those someone(s) ain’t who the system was built on?⁣
⁣
Exactly.⁣
⁣
It was written by the people it was built for.⁣
⁣
And it shows because it describes racism as an attitude. Individual. Rare. Correctable with better manners. Ignorable. Plausibly deniable. And conveniently, never them.⁣
⁣
Once racism is a feeling, every conversation about it turns into an argument over whether somebody overreacted. ⁣
⁣
And a child raised on that definition looks at who lives where, whose school has what, who gets followed, who gets believed, who gets the benefit of the doubt, who gets to grow old — and files all of it under how things are.⁣
⁣
Nobody argues with weather.⁣
⁣
But distribution has a design, and a design can be traced by anyone taught to look. ⁣
⁣
A child who can trace it can see it in the school they’re returning to in a matter of days, in their neighborhood in a zip code that we can look at to accurately predict life outcomes, and in their own friend group, which shapes more about them than parents feel comfortable admitting. ⁣
⁣
And a child who can see it can eventually refuse to cooperate with it, which is the only thing that has ever changed anything.⁣
⁣
That doesn’t start with a lecture. ⁣
⁣
It starts with an accurate definition. ⁣
⁣
That’s where Monday’s class begins — in language a six-year-old can process and a fifteen-year-old can’t roll their eyes at.⁣

You’ve talked to your kid about race.⁣
⁣
You haven’t talked to them about racism.⁣
⁣
Only one of those conversations raises someone who can recognize racism in a school policy, a playground taunt, or a pattern of behavior toward the lone Black kid in their otherwise homogenous friend group.⁣
⁣
The distance between those two children — The one who speaks up and the one who co-signs with their silence — isn’t courage.⁣
⁣
And the difference can cause irreparable harm or be life saving.⁣
⁣

The pre-apology feels polite. But it’s really just your obedience to systems that exist to ruin you and your kids.
⁣
Here’s what nobody tells you about that disclaimer: it isn’t humility, and it isn’t a confidence problem. ⁣
⁣
It’s labor you’re withdrawing from a fight — covertly, in advance, before anyone even asks you to.⁣
⁣
Which means the solution was never “find your voice” or “feel more confident.” ⁣
⁣
You don’t need to work on your self-esteem.⁣
⁣
You need to stop spending your precious energy apologizing for having any.⁣
⁣
That’s harder than it sounds, because the shushing isn’t coming from outside anymore. ⁣
⁣
You’ve internalized it and a system that wants you quiet is counting on that — on you doing the silencing yourself, for free, where no one has to be the villain and you spend the rest of your life practicing self-love instead of cussin’ folks out.⁣
⁣
So here’s what I actually teach: how to redirect energy and move your labor — your voice, your money, your time — toward the world you say you want, without burning yourself down or reiterating the very systems you’re trying to divest from.⁣

When you don’t have your priorities in order, accountability and propaganda produce the same feeling and you end up responding the same, which is why you’re worn out and ineffective.⁣
⁣
Accountability and propaganda demand opposite responses. ⁣
⁣
If every critique reads as “disappear,” you’ll disappear and the whatever movements you thought you were contributing to lose your labor while you spin out in “self-awareness.”⁣
⁣
The Combahee River Collective taught us that Black women’s freedom would require ending every interlocking, overlapping, and multiplicative system of oppression, which means the measure of your response to critique is never “do I feel better,” it’s “did my labor move toward that?” ⁣
⁣
Sort the competing narratives. ⁣
⁣
Respond to the right one. ⁣
⁣

Just a couple of weeks ago ya’ll were stomping up and down the internet hollering “wE nEeD a mAtRiArChAl sOcIeTy!!!” ⁣
⁣
But ya’ll don’t want matriarchy.⁣
⁣
Because co-creating and maintaining a matriarchal society would require that you expand your concept of motherhood and mothering, and you would rather drag your coochie across hot asphalt than do that.⁣
⁣
The fact that people didn’t miss the opportunity to turn Mother’s Day into a fight over deservingness instead of a broader conversation about care, attachment, nurturing, interdependence, and community shows how much ya’ll like to lie and you don’t actually want to be free.⁣
⁣
Especially because motherhood under patriarchy is already politicized, stratified, and racialized.⁣
⁣
We already know whose motherhood is protected.⁣
⁣
👉🏾 Whose motherhood is criminalized.⁣
👉🏾 Whose children are considered innocent.⁣
👉🏾 Whose parenting is monitored.⁣
👉🏾 Whose reproduction is controlled.⁣
👉🏾 Whose grief is humanized.⁣
👉🏾Whose caregiving is expected but devalued.⁣
⁣
You are are still deeply emotionally invested in hierarchy, exclusivity, legitimacy, and social gatekeeping.⁣
⁣
A matriarchal ethic would require:⁣
⁣
🌱 Interdependence⁣
🌱 Collective responsibility⁣
🌱 Expansive care⁣
🌱 Relational accountability⁣
🌱 Redistribution⁣
🌱 De-centering dominance itself⁣
⁣
Not simply moving women into positions of authority within the same scarcity-based framework.

Suddenly everybody (and they mama) wants “matriarchy.”⁣
⁣
We’re true to this, not new to this⁣
⁣
A matrifocal society has always been available to you.⁣
⁣
The United States just chose whiteness instead.⁣
⁣
The blueprint for survival was always here, in plain sight.⁣
⁣
You saw:⁣
⁣
The Black femmes.⁣
The Black organizers.⁣
The Black educators.⁣
The Black artists.⁣
The Black aunties.⁣
The Black mothers.⁣
⁣
The people who have been practicing collective care and survival all along.⁣
⁣
A matriarchal society cannot exist without:⁣
⁣
* Integrity⁣
* Repair⁣
* Accountability⁣
* Trust⁣
* Care without control⁣
⁣
And that means many people will have to unlearn everything patriarchy taught them about power.⁣
⁣
Especially white women and liberal feminists.⁣
⁣
Because you cannot build matriarchy while remaining invested in whiteness.⁣
⁣
You cannot build collective care while avoiding accountability.⁣
⁣
And you cannot restore democracy without repairing relationship.⁣
⁣
This Mother’s Day, I’m thinking about the Black women who mothered movements.⁣
⁣
Who held communities together while the state abandoned them.⁣
⁣
Who practiced survival as sacred work.⁣
⁣
