One of the harder truths I had to learn in my own co-parenting journey was that ending a relationship didn’t end our need to work together as parents.
We were still two different people. We didn’t suddenly share every value, perspective, or parenting instinct just because we both loved our child.
What had to change was the goal.
Instead of trying to get the other person to see things exactly as I did, I had to keep asking: What are we trying to create for our child?
That’s what collaboration means to me.
Not sameness. Not surrendering your voice. Not pretending the differences aren’t there.
It’s learning how to build enough shared vision around your child that those differences don’t continually pull the family apart.
In Cooperative Co-Parenting for Secure Kids, I explore Collaboration as one of the Six C’s of cooperative co-parenting, along with practical ways to create a more secure two-home family.
