The Pink Lady’s Slipper (Cypripedium acaule) was designated as Maine’s state wildflower in 1937 and is one of the most recognizable native flowers in New England.

🌸 2. It Can Take Years to Bloom
A Pink Lady’s Slipper may spend 10–15 years growing underground before producing its first flower. Patience is definitely part of its life cycle!

🌸 3. It Tricks Bees Into Pollinating It
The flower’s slipper-shaped pouch acts like a trap. Bees enter looking for nectar, but there isn’t any. To escape, they must crawl past the pollen, helping pollinate the flower.

🌸 4. It Depends on a Fungus to Survive
The tiny seeds contain almost no stored food. They must form a partnership with a specific soil fungus to germinate and grow, which makes transplanting them from the wild nearly impossible.

🌸 5. Picking One Doesn’t Usually Kill the Plant — But Digging It Up Often Does
While picking the flower can prevent seed production, the real danger is digging up the plant. Because of its specialized relationship with soil fungi, transplanted wild Lady’s Slippers rarely survive.
