✨ Behind the Choreography: “The 6th Movement” ✨
We are absolutely thrilled to feature this powerful piece by Margaret Fitz in this season’s repertoire! Watch to get a glimpse behind the scenes as our Dramatic Truth Company dancers rehearse the 3rd movement.
We asked Margaret about her unique creative process for this work:
“What sparks my creativity as a choreographer changes from piece to piece. Music is a huge inspiration for me, but so are the dancers I’m working with and even the number of dancers involved, because all of those things affect how movement develops.
With The 6th Movement, I approached choreography differently than I have before. I wanted to stay within the world of ballet while creating four distinct movement textures and visual qualities for the different tendencies explored in the piece, so each section would physically look different from the others. I had experimented with that idea briefly in past projects, but never to this extent.
This piece was also the most I have ever been in community with the Lord throughout the creative process. I have prayed while choreographing before, but this piece felt completely different to me—it honestly felt like a download from the Lord rather than something I came up with myself. Because of that, I spent a lot of time praying over the movement, especially for the character representing the Lord in Spirit form, because I wanted to make sure what was being shown onstage aligned with what He wanted.
The entire process was very different from my usual way of choreographing, and I think that changed the movement quality of the ballet itself. Even now, when I watch the piece, it does not feel like my usual choreography, I sometimes do not recognize myself in it. The movement quality, process, and overall style are very different from how I normally create work, which is why the piece still feels different from anything else I have made before.”
