Yesterday we had 4 different farriers working on the horses throughout the day. Here Stacey takes questions from the campers while he works on one of the ponies.

Routine farrier care is a very important part of routine maintenance. If your horse has shoes it is recommended they be trimmed and reset every 6 weeks. Same thing if your horse is barefoot, they still need trimmed every 6 weeks.

There is something about your first experience with horses. Curiosity, nervousness, and all of the emotions can quickly turn into a connection that is hard to explain. For lots of people that first time turns into a lifelong passion and love that continues to grow stronger and stronger year after year.

Watching new people young and old find this love just as many of us do is something we feel strongly about. Horses can be there for you and help you get through some really rough times. They can be your best friend when you need a shoulder to cry on or someone to tell your secrets to. Never underestimate the bond between a horse and their person.

How to say “it’s camp time” without saying a word! This picture of Buttermilk says it all!

This is always one of the favorite camp activities, year after year! Of course we use safe, washable paint, hair gel with some glitter, and lots of ribbons. Each group of kids get to paint their pony the way they want, just no paint around their eyes or on their face at all.

After they finish each pony gets rinsed off and scrubbed really good. It may take multiple times but the pony is so clean when the kids finish.

If truth be known we think the ponies secretly love it too. They don’t have to work on their painting day but get so much love and attention. Kinda like a big spa day. See how relaxed Buttermilk looks in this picture!

Calamity and Perky’s baby is growing!

The first image is of the ultrasound at 15 days. This is about the time we are first able to detect a pregnancy. What you see is just the embryonic vesicle. It is about 15-20 mm in size. This is roughly the size of a penny. The actual embryo inside the vesicle is microscopic and not able to be visualized at this time.

The second clip is at 30 days. Look close and you can see the heartbeat. At 30 days the normal heart rate for the embryo is roughly 120 beats per minute. The actual embryo size is about 1 1/2 - 2 inches.

Gestation for a horse is roughly 342 days on average, but anywhere from 320 - 370 is full term. We have a long way to go but look for this baby April of 2027!

Grooming time for Intro camp this morning.

Grooming is such an important part of horse care, and especially before riding. We really try to emphasize this to all of the campers. But on days like today with the rain and mud, it isn’t easy

It is however necessary! Getting all of the dirt from under the saddle prevents unnecessary discomfort and possible injury to the horse. We also make sure the campers pick out their feet and check for rocks. All the steps have to be taken before they can tack and ride!

This is a really fun group of Intro Camp students. They spent today learning the basics of riding, learning horse anatomy, and even getting caught in a downpour in the woods. Cant wait to see what tomorrow holds!
