I TIED A WATER PENNY. 😳🪰

Yep… that weird little armored alien on the right is a REAL aquatic insect — and trout eat them.

It’s a **Water Penny larva**, and I honestly can’t remember seeing many people try to turn one into a fly.

So naturally… I had to. 🤣

This one fought me every step of the way. The flattened shell, the segmentation, the legs, the translucency — getting it to actually look like the real insect was a completely different challenge than tying a normal nymph.

But after a whole lot of experimenting…

Has anyone ever tied a Water Penny?

Not many have in the history of fly tying.

I’ve been working on my own version of this strange little aquatic beetle larva—and it’s finally coming together.

This maggot breathes through its tail—and fish actually eat it. 🤣

Meet the mousie, a rat-tailed maggot and the aquatic larva of a hoverfly. That ridiculous “tail” is actually a telescoping breathing siphon that allows it to live in oxygen-starved water. The real larvae are even sold as ice-fishing bait for perch and various other species of fish.

So naturally, I had to tie one.

I used hollow tubing with fine mono to create the flexible, tapered siphon and tiny drops of resin for the pseudopods underneath.

Would you fish it—or has the Mad Flytyentist finally gone too far? 🤣

I Turned Athletic Pre-Wrap Into a Catalpa Worm Fly

Creating the thick, juicy profile of a catalpa worm is difficult with standard fly-tying materials—so I built the underbody with athletic pre-wrap.

Then I added Kiley’s Exo Skin, Swiss Straw, golden pheasant tail barbs, thread ribbing and Veevus Midge Body for the lateral lines.

One of the South’s most famous natural baits…except this one is a fly.

Most Anglers Are Just Flossing Salmon

Salmon generally aren’t chasing food once they enter the river, although they’ll occasionally pick something up. Many anglers rely on yarn flies or Silver Spiders—but this simple caddis gives them something they may actually take through familiarity, curiosity, or territorial aggression. And it gets ’em.

I turned the tip of a ZIP TIE into a sow bug by combining two famous fly patterns—the Ray Charles and Rainbow Warrior. 🤯

The result is the Ray’bow Warrior: part realistic food, part flashy attractor, and completely different from anything in the fly box.

A ZIP TIE… turned into this. 👀

This quasi-realistic sow bug / cress bug starts with an ordinary household zip tie and ends up looking like something you’d expect to crawl out from under a rock in a spring creek.

A little Hareline Clear D-Rib, tan ostrich, markers and thick UV resin bring the whole thing to life.

It’s part fly tying, part miniature sculpture—and designed to imitate one of the most important little crustaceans trout see in spring creeks.

Would you have guessed there was a zip tie under there?
