“You're wasting too much time on that fly.”

I've heard it before. Maybe you've said it yourself about something someone else loves doing.

But here's how I see it.

If spending a little extra time at the vise brings me peace, challenges my creativity, and lets me forget about the stresses of everyday life for a little while, how exactly is that a waste of time?

People spend $150 an hour talking to someone to help them find a little peace.

Sometimes, mine comes from a hook, some thread, a few feathers, and the patience to get it right.

I'm not just tying a fly. I'm enjoying the process.

Not everything valuable has to make you money. Sometimes, the value is in what it does for you. 🎣

🐛 I MADE A WAXWORM OUT OF LATEX..... AND USED A SCRUB BRUSH FOR THE LEGS! 🤯

Meet Waxy the Waxworm!

Waxworms are terrestrial caterpillars in the family Pyralidae — not aquatic insects — but fish absolutely love them!

Here’s the crazy part: I used the bristles from an ordinary household scrub brush to create realistic legs that poke right through the Nymph Skin latex. A completely different way to approach fly tying!

I haven’t seen another fly tyer use this technique. Have you?

A HORSE FLY LARVA… made from fly-tying materials. 👀
Real larva → my imitation.
I used athletic pre-wrap for the underbody and Nymph Skin for the outer skin, then used thread to create the raised segment ridges.
The goal was to reproduce the actual structure—not just make something that looks like a worm.
Would you fish this? 🎣

What the hell is this? 👀

This is a black fly larva (family Simuliidae)—an aquatic insect that trout encounter in moving water, but one that doesn't get nearly as much attention from fly anglers as caddis, mayflies and stoneflies.

So I decided to tie one. 🎣

The ultimate brook trout fly… because let’s face it, char aren’t always that smart. 🤣
Foam. Rubber legs. Red fuzz. Absolutely ZERO dignity.
Will a brook trout eat it?
You already know the answer. 😂

Tubifex / silt worm imitation — built long, skinny and flexible so it can move like the real thing when it gets knocked loose and drifts downstream.
The little trailer hook lets the whole body bend, snake and pulse instead of acting like a stiff worm pattern.
No dubbing. No fancy body. Just a ridiculously thin red profile and movement.
Would you fish this… or have I officially gone too far? 😂

The simplest caddis pupa money can buy… except it’s not for sale. 🤣
Three materials. That’s it.
I tied this one to imitate an October Caddis pupa, but the idea goes way beyond October Caddis. Change the size, change the colors, and you can imitate a pile of different caddis pupae with the same basic construction.
Simple enough to tie fast. Buggy enough to fish hard.
