DOUBLE J EQUINE RANCH SORTING RULES

1. Teams
Teams consist of two riders.
Riders may choose their own partners
2. Time Limit
Each team will have 60 seconds to complete their run.
3. Cattle
Ten numbered cattle (0-9) and one unnumbered cow will be used.
All cattle begin in the herd pen.
4. Starting Number
The announcer will call a starting number before each run.
Teams must sort cattle in numerical order beginning with the called number.

Example:
If the starting number is 4, cattle must be sorted in this order:
4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, 1, 2, 3

5. Sorting Rules
Only the correct numbered cow may cross into the sorting pen.
Once a cow is completely across the line, the next number becomes active.
Team members may work either side of the gate.
6. No-Time (Disqualification)
A run will receive a No-Time if:
A cow crosses out of order.
More than one cow crosses when only one should.
A sorted cow returns to the herd pen.
A rider displays excessive roughness toward cattle.
Any unsportsmanlike conduct occurs.
5 second penalty for horse biting cows
7. Scoring
Teams will be ranked by the number of cattle correctly sorted.
Teams sorting the same number of cattle will be ranked by fastest time.
Exact ties will result in tied payout positions being combined and split equally.
8. Arena Conduct
Ride at your own risk.
All riders must display good sportsmanship.
Event officials have the final decision on all disputes.
9. Liability
All participants and spectators enter at their own risk.

Recently, we were approached with a challenge…

A half-blind and completely deaf horse came in for training. She’s 4 years old, and we’re not sure if she’s ever been ridden—likely not.

Most people would say no. We thought about saying no too. 😬 But after a lot of communication with the owner and a clear understanding that this mare may never become a riding horse because of her circumstances, we were all on the same page. The owner wanted us to give her a shot.

This first week with this mare has been eye-opening.

This horse has been thrown away, run through sale barns, and given up on. She can hardly see, she can’t hear, and she doesn’t always understand what’s being asked of her. But every day, she meets us at her stall door ready to give it her best shot.

She is patient. She is kind. She has a heart of gold.

After everything she’s been through, she should be mean, scared, and want nothing to do with people. Instead, she’s willing to try again. This horse has a heart of absolute gold.

Then I got to thinking—so many trainers wouldn’t even consider taking a horse like this. And I get that.

Sure, I’d rather be riding that Metallic Cat c**t or turning up on a Firewater, but I’m also not going to turn down an opportunity for someone when this is all they can afford.

I had a stall open and time to give.

The horse industry can get so arrogant sometimes—ugly, stuck up, and too good for certain horses.

This horse deserved a chance, and I’m so grateful her owner chose us to give her one.
