Buena Vista Mountain Adventures - BVMA

Buena Vista Mountain Adventures - BVMA Guided Backcountry and Nordic Skiing What makes our winter adventure unique? We can also provide rental gear, to include avalanche safety equipment.

BVMA uses snowmobiles to access untracked powder in the bowls and glades of the high country. You don’t have to be an expert skier, if you can confidently ski the blue runs at the resort, you can ski with us. We can also accommodate expert skiers looking to get into backcountry skiing or just up for a challenge. In addition to our snowmobile accessed backcountry skiing, we offer Nordic (also known

as cross country) skiing lessons and tours in the beautiful San Isabel National forest. We will meet in town and then travel a short distance to the trails where we will enjoy gliding through the forest in an unmatched winter landscape. We welcome those who are new to the sport. BVMA provides lessons and can set you up with rental skis through our partners at The Trailhead store in Buena Vista.

The best Wilderness First Responders are people who can stay calm, think clearly, and take action when it matters most.

If your work or adventures take you beyond immediate medical help, a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification or recertification is one of the most valuable investments you can make in yourself and those around you.

Spend seven days earning your SOLO WFR certification or two days renewing your certification through immersive wilderness medicine training. Through realistic outdoor scenarios, patient assessments, and practical decision-making, you'll build or refresh the skills needed to assess patients, manage emergencies, and provide care when help is hours away.

All courses include a SOLO Wilderness First Responder certification or recertification recognized by the Wilderness Medical Education Collaborative (WEC), as well as an American Heart Association-approved
CPR & AED certification.

Is it time to renew your Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification?

The BVMA / SOLO WFR Recertification is not a sit-back-and-review course. This is a 2-day, in-person course because outdoor education should be taught outdoors. This means field-focused, hands-on training, not online modules. You will spend your time working through scenario-based training in small groups, applying patient assessment, decision-making, and treatment skills in realistic backcountry situations. The focus is simple. Build confidence, stay current with protocol updates, and reinforce your skills through repetition so your response is clear when it matters.

Successful completion extends your WFR certification for three years and includes a two-year American Heart Association CPR and AED certification. Participants must hold a current (not expired) WFR from SOLO or a WMEC-approved reciprocity provider such as WMA, DMM, AERIE, WMTC, or NOLS. Reach out if you have questions about eligibility.

If you love adventuring outdoors or work in a remote environment, a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course teaches you how to respond when something goes wrong, and help is hours or days away.

This training is fully in person because outdoor education should take place outdoors, not on a computer. Over seven days, you’ll learn through hands-on, realistic scenarios and develop a repeatable framework for managing emergencies when resources are limited.

You’ll build skills in patient assessment, musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries, environmental and medical emergencies, survival skills, and prolonged patient care and evacuation.

The course also includes American Heart Association-approved BLS for Healthcare Providers, CPR, and AED certification.

WFR is the industry standard for outdoor professionals and serious backcountry travelers.

Early starts. Long days. Miles away. Built for people who love the outdoors. Hikers, bikers, paddlers, climbers, skiers, hunters, anyone who spends time off the beaten path. Two days. Hands-on. Scenario-based. Learn how to assess injuries, manage situations, and make decisions when help isn’t close. No fluff. Just practical skills you’ll actually use. Because being prepared means more freedom to go farther, stay out longer, and take care of things if something comes up.

If you have been thinking about taking AIARE 1, there is still time to get it done this season and head into next winter feeling more confident in the backcountry.

Join Buena Vista Mountain Adventures (BVMA) for AIARE 1 in the Sawatch Range. As an A3 recognized AIARE provider, our courses focus on practical skills you will use every time you head into the mountains including trip planning, recognizing avalanche terrain, making group decisions, and performing a basic companion rescue.

Our courses are built around time outside. You will spend all three days in the field exploring different locations across the Sawatch Range and applying the AIARE decision making framework in varied terrain, aspects, and snow conditions.

There is a bit of pre-course homework so we can spend less time on screens and more time learning in the mountains where outdoor education should happen.

The event is open to all winter backcountry travelers, whether you're on skis, splitboard, snowmobile, cross country skis, or snowshoes. Most avalanche accidents do not happen to strangers. They happen to friends. Ski partners. Riding buddies. Family. People you care about. A BVMA AIARE Avalanche Rescue course is a full day of hands-on training focused on how to quickly locate and dig out a buried partner using the tools every backcountry traveler should carry: transceiver, probe, and shovel. If you travel in avalanche terrain, avalanche rescue skills are foundational and should be practiced regularly, even by experienced backcountry users. Spend a day building speed, confidence, and teamwork through realistic rescue scenarios. You will leave better prepared to take care of the people you travel with. These are the skills you hope you never need, but will be grateful to have if you do. Small groups. Experienced instructors. Field-based backcountry skills.
