At first glance, this seems simple: just switch the rating cell in a spreadsheet.

But when scoring is automated in the cloud, it gets more complicated very quickly.

The system has to know exactly which rating or scoring model applied to each boat, in each race, use it in the corrected-time calculation, preserve that configuration with the finalized result, and then carry those scores accurately through an entire Series or Season. A later rating change also can’t silently rewrite a result that was already finalized.

That’s the problem behind a new GybeHub feature I just pushed out.

You can now set up a fleet with multiple ratings or scoring models and choose which one applies race by race.

For PHRF, that might mean:

• W/L rating
• Point-to-point / distance rating
• Shorthanded rating
• Other certificate-specific ratings

This is becoming more relevant as PHRF certificates evolve. Groups like MWPHRF are now issuing DHCP or similar ratings intended for point-to-point and distance racing. On my own boat, the difference is about 3 seconds per mile.

When a skipper registers, they can provide each applicable rating once. Then, when scoring a race, the race committee can select the appropriate rating for the entire fleet.

So if a Series has windward/leeward races one week and a point-to-point race the next, you can simply switch which rating is being used without creating separate fleets or manually changing every boat.

You can also override the selection boat by boat. A good example would be a boat sailing under a shorthanded configuration and using its shorthanded rating while the rest of the fleet continues using the normal race rating.

The same concept applies to ORC. A fleet can be configured with multiple permitted scoring models — for example, W/L and AP — and the race committee can select the appropriate model for each race while keeping the same fleet and registrations.

The goal is straightforward: collect the possible ratings once, use the right one for the race actually sailed, and preserve the integrity of the scoring history from that race all the way through Series and Season standings.

A great day for fall racing in Michigan! Both Great Lakes Yacht Club and North Star Sail Club each ran multiple windward/leeward races during a beautiful October afternoon. Race results, for the individual races and for the day, in the comments 👇

There has been a lot of great racing this weekend in the Detroit area. One of these was today's race hosted by Great Lakes Yacht Club! They have more fall events coming up, so join in on the fun. Race results from today's race below.

Because every fleet deserves great scoring.

Three very well-sailed boats, a season of close racing, and after the final race of the Grosse Pointe Sail Club Sundown Series, Das Boot, Fast Tango Racing, and Shockwave all ended up tied at 13 points.

This is one of those little things with GybeHub that I’m pretty proud of, because scoring this correctly is not quite as simple as just looking at who did better in the last race.

Under RRS Appendix A8, the first step is A8.1, where the tied boats’ non-excluded scores are arranged from best to worst and compared in order.

Das Boot: 1, 2, 2, 3, 5
Fast Tango: 1, 2, 2, 3, 5
Shockwave: 1, 2, 3, 3, 4

All three matched on the first two scores. On the third comparison, Das Boot and Fast Tango each had another 2, while Shockwave had a 3, which put Shockwave in 3rd.

But Das Boot and Fast Tango were still completely tied under A8.1, with identical score sequences.

So GybeHub then moved to A8.2, which compares the boats’ results in the last race and works backward until the tie is broken.

In the final race:

Das Boot — 1st
Fast Tango — 3rd

That settled the remaining tie.

1st — Das Boot
2nd — Fast Tango
3rd — Shockwave

The part I really like is that all of this happened automatically as soon as the final race results were published.

GybeHub recognized the three-way tie, applied A8.1, broke out Shockwave, recognized Das Boot and Fast Tango were still tied, applied A8.2, and updated the final standings immediately.

For the racers, there was no waiting around while somebody worked it out by hand, and no wondering whether the tie-break was done correctly. The standings were there right away, and they were right.

That is exactly the kind of thing I wanted GybeHub to be able to do.

We’re not sure if we’re the first to do this—but we’re pretty excited about it.

PDF course charts are great. But what if your course chart could do more?

GYBEHUB now supports interactive race course charts with live wind and weather radar built right into the map. Racers can explore the course, see current conditions, and even look ahead to see what the wind and weather are forecast to do on the course up to 96 hours in advance.

The feature is live for every event now, and the Grosse Pointe Sail Club Sundown Series is the first event to put it to use.

Another step toward giving sailors better information before they ever leave the dock.

Because every fleet deserves great scoring.

PHRF, ORC, IRC, Portsmouth, and one design racing has never been easier (or cheaper). No more juggling separate payment, registration, and scoring systems. No more per-boat or per-race fee structures. No more manual standings calculations. No more single-login or single-computer scoring programs. It's all on the cloud! Gybehub is currently available at absolutely no cost by invitation, and invitations are available!
