🏁 WEEKEND RECAP 🏁

SATURDAY — PITTSBURGH

Saturday started with just Daryl in action at Pittsburgh.

Daryl rolled off 7th in his heat and went straight to work, making his way up to 3rd in the caution-free, 8-lap race before the checkered flag fell.

Then came the redraw. Gus pulled a 7 and has since been fired from pill-pulling duties. The position is currently open — please inquire if interested. 😂

The feature was shaping up to be one of those “finish where you started” kind of races until a caution on lap 12 shook things up.

On the restart, Daryl was able to make a few moves and work his way up to 5th. After a hard-fought battle, he grabbed 4th and pulled away convincingly, bringing home a 4th-place finish and, just as importantly, a straight race car ready for Sunday at Tri-City.

SUNDAY — TRI-CITY

Sunday we took both cars to Tri-City, with Tony joining Daryl for the RUSH Tour race. This marked the first time Tony had pulled onto the track at Tri-City in 23 years.

The night didn't start as well as any of us had hoped in qualifying. In a 28-car field, Daryl qualified 19th and Tony qualified 20th.

Daryl’s qualifying effort lined him up 7th in Heat 1, one spot outside the top-six feature transfer positions. He quickly got to work, moving up to 5th early before eventually bringing it home in 3rd, earning him the 7th starting position for the feature.

Tony’s qualifying effort also lined him up 7th, this time in Heat 2. Like Daryl, he started outside the feature transfer positions, but Tony quickly grabbed 6th and held onto it for the remainder of the race, locking himself into the feature with a 17th-place starting position.

The crew got to work making the necessary adjustments to both cars before sending them out for the feature.

When the green flag dropped, Daryl quickly worked his way from 7th to 4th and spent much of the race battling for 3rd.

Tony was in a fight of his own, racing between roughly 12th and 16th throughout the feature. Then, with two laps remaining, the caution came out on lap 29. As the field paced under yellow, Tony pulled into the pits with a flat right rear.

We didn't love giving up our running position, but with a one-lap shootout coming and Tony having to restart from the rear, we made a business decision. Rather than risk tearing up a race car in the kind of last-lap carnage these situations can produce, we elected to park Tony's car for the final lap.

Daryl, meanwhile, would restart 4th on the outside. Unfortunately, the track had become extremely bottom-dominant, so he had his work cut out for him just to maintain his position, let alone move forward.

On the restart, the car pushed between Turns 1 and 2 and Daryl got up into the loose stuff, dropping all the way back to 10th. Fortunately, he got a mulligan when the caution flew again before the lap was completed, giving him his 4th-place starting position back.

On the next restart, the car stuck much better on the top. Daryl lost just one position before the checkered flag flew, bringing it home 5th — which, given the circumstances and having to restart on the outside of a bottom-dominant racetrack, we'll absolutely take.

Overall, it was a fun and productive weekend with both cars showing speed and coming home in one piece.

Now we're looking forward to getting back to Pittsburgh on Saturday! 🏁
