The Purpose of light 💡
Light has a way of revealing what darkness conceals. Helping us to see what is otherwise hidden.
It allows us to see what is true and to recognize where we are, where we are going, and what surrounds us. Light doesn’t just reveal the path; it brings reality into full view.
John begins his Gospel by telling us that the One who came into the world was not merely a teacher, prophet, or great moral example. Jesus is the eternal Word who was with God and was God. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all humanity.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”— John 1:5
Go in human flesh was the coming of Light into our darkness.
Revealing at least three profound realities:
Jesus reveals who God is.
In Christ, the invisible God makes Himself known. We do not have to wonder what God is like or whether He is near. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. In Jesus, we see the glory, grace, truth, and character of God.
Jesus reveals who we are.
Light can be comforting, but it can also be confronting. When Christ shines into our lives, He exposes our sin, our rebellion, our brokenness, and the places where we have tried to live on our terms. His light shows us not merely what is wrong around us, but what is wrong within us, and why we desperately need saving.
Jesus reveals who we were created to be.
The gospel does not end with exposing our sin. The same Light that reveals our brokenness also reveals our God-given purpose. We are people made in the image of God, and in Christ we are invited to become children of God—not through our own merit, but through faith in His name.
The light of Christ does not simply help us see better.
It helps us see God, ourselves, and the life we were created for.
And the darkness cannot overcome Him and therefore cannot overcome us.
