Originally, the Club was located on Bullfrog Road, between Cle Elum and Roslyn, and had around 400 members. In 2000 the Bullfrog Road site was closed as the property owned by Plum Creek Timber Company was sold to Trendwest Resorts. With financial help from Trendwest Resorts (now Suncadia) the club purchased 184 acres on top of Hayward Hill. For the next 10 years, with many fewer active members, th
e Board of Directors worked on pursuing a zoning change and applying for a Conditional Use Permit. In 2014 the Kittitas County Hearings Examiner recommended that the permit be approved. The County Commissioners approved to the permit to build a shooting range on the property. In the meantime a wind power company approached the club about building a wind farm in the area, with at least one windmill on our land. This would mean financial income for the club. During the construction work the wind farm agreed to do some work for our range, namely building a large berm and leveling off the rifle range area. The next major step was a grant. Members worked out a power point show and presented it to the State Recreation and Conservation Office Committee in September 2014. In October we learned we were approved for a $48,000 grant to start building infrastructure. This grant will become effective in July 2015 and work parties will be organized. The plan is to build numerous covered shooting stations, pathways and parking areas, and at least two safety baffles on the rifle range. Cascade Field & Stream Club hosts an annual fundraiser banquet on the last Saturday of February. The banquet location is the Putnam Centennial Center in Cle Elum, Wa. There are live and silent auctions, raffles, a dinner served by the ladies of the Center, and a full bar. In June the club hosts the annual Kids Fishing Derby at Lavender Lake just west of Cle Elum. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout from the Department of Fish & Wildlife for this exciting event. Prizes are for the first trout, largest three trout in each age class, and there are drawings for more prizes. The Cascade Field & Stream Club supports other groups including 4-H On Target, Easton School Archery Program, and we plan to develop a scholarship for a Kittitas county student interested in a career in an outdoor field. As the range develops the club plans to host many shooting events, including s***t/ trap, rifle, pistol, and archery. Our Hunter Education Certified Instructors already teach three classes for first-time hunters in June, July, and August each year. Keep an eye on the calendar for coming activities.
