Syracuse Skate Gang (SSG) is a skating group for women and men 18+ on quad or inline skates, founded by Havoc Baldwin and Esprit de Co**se. We host weekly classes every month Fall-Spring in Assault City Roller Derby’s private practice space, The Vault, and skate outdoors all summer long at Onondaga Lake Park and other paved trails around Central New York. SSG’s indoor class is a recreational non-c

ompetitive skating class that teaches derby skills in a safe, encouraging environment with an amazing group of people. You don’t need to know how to skate to join, and we’ll help you get the right skates & protective gear at our scheduled Open House nights. So if you want to learn to skate, want to become a better skater, want to prepare for competitive roller derby, or just want a great weekly workout – come roll with us!

Just kidding! The forecast has changed for the better—that being said, check the radar and skate at your own risk! We’re meeting geared up at the gate by the Salt Museum. From there, you can choose to check out the skate park* or skate the trail! 😎🛼🛣️

Remember that you can always join our friends at Black Mamba Skate Park on the rink, if outdoor skating isn’t your thing! 💙🖤

Karaoke on wheels last week was an absolute blast—thanks so much for bringing the noise, Francisco Ruben Arce! Tomorrow we’re going to be hitting the East Shore of OLP (to cough cough, avoid the dreaded Fair and) so you can choose your own skateventure—hit the ramps at the skate park with some of our more daring members of the Gang,* or hit the trail with our fitness-focused skaters who love going the distance. Either way, we’ll all be meeting up at the Salt Museum at 6PM!

*Helmets required, other pads and gear STRONGLY recommended!

Before the beloved/dreaded (depending on your alignment) fair is here, the PLAN is to have a beautiful outdoor skate date at Orange Lot tomorrow featuring parking lot karaoke courtesy of Cool Dad Francisco Ruben Arce and an open clothing/skate gear swap! But because Mama Nature doesn’t always agree with our plans, we’ll be watching the weather and making a call tomorrow afternoon as to whether we can meet up for sure. Get your thrift-worthy clothes, your trade-worthy skates & gear, and your pipes warmed up and ready just in case! 🚫🎡🤞🌤️

WEDNESDAY SKATE DATE:
Honeywell Lot, OLP, 6PM

Ready for something different?! If you’ve been wanting to skate outside but trail skating isn’t your thing, the Honeywell Lot (aka the Onondaga Lake Park Visitor Center) offers lots of clean, silky smooth pavement with a beautiful lake view for some outdoor “rink” skating! If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a little over a mile of winding, smooth trail (also known as the West Shore Trail Extension) that takes you to the greatest adventure of all, a big concrete bridge with gorgeous views of the lake and bald eagles! Choose your own SKATEVENTURE! Because it’s all so close together, we’ll still be skating with each other no matter what you choose. 😁🛼

⛈️ Note that the weather forecast has changed since yesterday evening and thunder storms are predicted earlier in the day now. Please keep an eye on the weather and determine if it's skate for you to skate--we will not be meeting if it's actively thunder storming. You are always welcome to join our friends at Black Mamba if the skate date gets rained out!

WEDNESDAY SKATE DATE:
Santaro Park, Velasko Rd, 6-8PM*

This large, super smooth flat skating area just got a recent makeover and is perfect for working on fancy footwork and moving your feet. If you’re looking for the rink experience outside, this is it! If you’re new to the Gang, it’s also a great way to meet and talk to other skaters.

*Please note that the skating area closes at dusk and we must leave the premises by then, so plan your arrival time accordingly! If you bring a speaker, please keep music family-friendly/radio edits. Please hydrate responsibly and discreetly! Our respect for the park ensures our continued use of this incredible space. 🙏

Photographer Julia C. Banach got some incredible photos of the Gang at the city’s Pride Night at Clinton Square roller rink last month! This is the last week the rink is open downtown, and in an effort to have our skate date there this week, we’ll be watching the weather and flexible with our skate day. If the forecast changes and things are looking good for Wednesday we’ll make a call by 3PM tomorrow. Otherwise we’re likely to have our skate date Friday this week so we can enjoy this beautiful rink one last time! Thanks again to Sharon F. Owens and Syracuse Parks & Recreation for making our dreams come true with this rink!
