The past few months have been a period of deep introspection and self-reflection. Both for myself, .the.warrior and Meghan Ramos, .

We have been quietly working behind the scenes, delving into the core values and beliefs that drive us as coaches, women, and humans.

It has been a transformative process, empowering us to find our voices and articulate the deeply-felt convictions that have always been at the heart of our work.

These core values are a staple of what we stand behind as we move forward with this amazingly beautiful community we call Athena.

Movement and exercise is a great management tool for long term treatment of orthopedic and other health related concerns.

That’s true, but it can be overwhelming.

Especially when you’re someone who has been in chronic pain and nothing seems to be working.

When the body creates its own “solution” to a stressed area it often will send signals to avoid using it. This means over time we create movement patterns that are less than optimal and the problem seems to get worse and worse.

Pain symptoms persist and functionality of everyday tasks gets increasingly more challenging.

That’s exactly why it’s necessary to move and understand what feedback your body gives you. Pain isn’t something we should avoid at all costs, it’s something to begin to listen to and understand.

Learning when something gets agitated helps in understanding how to address it. This knowledge is key in knowing what exercises and movements will strengthen your body and address the stressed movements over time.

Paying attention and addressing pain is a physical and emotional challenge for sure. It’s a deep dive into learning about yourself and a process that takes diligence, grace, patience, and a long term commitment.

This process creates autonomy and independence.

It allows for the knowledge and power to manage and maintain your own structural system throughout the entirety of your life, keeping you more active and mobile to do the things you enjoy.

Pretty empowering! 💪

HYDRATION is a foundational concept at Athena - we ask about it in our intake questionnaire, we discuss it often during our Exploration program, and if you've been here long enough you know we rant about it constantly during training sessions.

WHY is your fluid intake so important to us and, even more importantly, how much water do you actually NEED to drink daily to thrive?

Water aids in digestion, organ function, energy management throughout the day, and other really important stuff that your body needs. And in our experience just about everyone we work with could drink more of it - you'd be surprised at the general physical annoyances you can control if you focus on improving water intake.

Muscle cramps during exercise?

💧It may be more of a hydration issue than a body part "problem."

Fatigue and low energy in the midafternoon?

💧 Try downing a big glass of water before you reach for a coffee or soda and see if your mood improves.

Feeling a little, erm, digestively blocked?

💧 Hydration plays a HUGE role in management of constipation (which can also show up as low back discomfort, fyi!)

If you're data driven, half of your body weight in ounces of fluid daily is a good number to aim for (yup, your morning coffee counts IF it's not the only type of liquid you consume!).

If you hate counting, just keep an eye on your p*e - it should be pale yellow in color. If it's darker, you probably need to increase your H20 consumption.

Take a cue from the Meg(h)ans and stock up on good water bottles that make it easy to remember to sip throughout the day.
