CopperDog

CopperDog Usually on the first weekend of March, the CopperDog sled-dog races are held annually. Join us at one of the best Winter events in Michigan! Hey!
(2)

If viable, the CopperPull, CopperDash, CopperDart, & CopperDrag happen on the same weekend. Let’s organize a sled dog race! That’s what a small group of people said in 2009, and from that initial idea the CopperDog 150 and CopperDog 35 sled dog races were born. Races usually run the first weekend in March. And as of recently, we have four races. The CopperDog 150 features teams of ten dogs and cov

ers 150 miles in three days, while the CopperDog 80 features teams of eight dogs and covers approximately forty miles each day. The CopperDog 30 and CopperDog 15 are single-stage races using six dogs. Which means… the first weekend in March finds up to 600 dogs racing through Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. The various CopperDog races are organized by CopperDog, Inc., a 501(c)3 organization located in Calumet, Michigan, a small town in the middle of the Keweenaw Peninsula – a narrow finger of land on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula that juts into the middle of Lake Superior. With an average annual snowfall of 241 inches it’s the perfect place for …well, a sled dog race. Since its beginning the CopperDog races have attracted mushers from around the world. While many mushers come from the Midwest, each race usually has several Canadian mushers competing – and in 2011 and 2012 a musher from South Africa competed. CopperDog is definitely a labor of love. It is an entirely volunteer operation, with more than 500 volunteers helping to put the race on. Local residents help mushers with their dogs, provide housing, and oversee trail crossings. Local police and fire departments volunteer their time to man all highway crossings and ensure the safety of all volunteers and participants. On its business end, CopperDog is run by an unpaid volunteer board of directors. CopperDog is more than just two sled dog races. In addition to promoting community vitality through sled dog racing, CopperDog strives to provide education on the history and sport of sled dog racing. Numerous public events – such as classroom visits, volunteer training, “Meet the Dogs” events, and free sled dog rides - are held throughout the year. CopperDog is always looking for new volunteers. If you’d like to work with a great group of people and be part of one of the MOST FUN winter events you’ll ever see, please contact us. We can’t do it without you!

Last week CopperDog attended the MADE U.P. Outdoor Summit put on by the 906 Adventure Team at Northern Michigan University.

It was amazing... but what did we get out of it?

Well... If we, as an organization, are serious and want to be stewards and leaders around the sport of sled dog racing, there was not a more obvious choice than to be proactive and intentional about the protection of the land, and the access to the land, we use. Not only for our event but also for biking, hiking, birdwatching, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, ORVing, etc. You get the point.

So as of today CopperDog is a member of KORC - Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition and will be attending their steering committee meetings. And we are doing this FOR ALL. Yes, you too!

With this decision, we will be a force in also preserving our history, culture, and way of life. Copper Country Forever!!

This post has -NO- tags, -NO- links, -NO- parties, -NO- gimmicks, and most importantly -NO SALES-. And we say this with conviction every single year...

May tomorrow mean something! Consider what it's all about; take a second to reflect and remember - it should never be a "Happy Memorial Day".

We pay respects to all that have gone that next step for you and these united states.

"Thank you for still standing watch over us and this beautiful land we call home."

Just a quick little post sharing what we are up to in the near future; because we think it's important. CopperDog (by the way of Kelly and Kiko) will be attending the "MADE U.P. Outdoor Summit" taking place at the end of the month at Northern Michigan University in the Queen City of Marquette.

Why? Conservation, sustainability, community, and adventure! Because it will be "...an opportunity to celebrate what we love most about the Upper Peninsula (and why we live here) - outdoor spaces and recreation."

A dynamic team of local individuals, organizations, and speakers was assembled and they will lead conversations on local topics that impact all of us. And you may even recognize some of the Copper Country representatives that will be there; Gina from KORC - Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition and Aaron from Rock Solid Trail Contracting, LLC.

We just wanted to let you all know that we take ownership in what we do and no decision is ever done without the consideration on how it affects the people, the land, and the future. And coming together to have a conversation on how it all intermingles with the Keweenaw, the Upper Peninsula, and the State of Michigan is a must! We go further to say that SLED DOG RACING is a huge part of the puzzle! The "Superior Crown Sled Dog Series" represents what lot of what we believe in!

See you there? That would be awesome! More information right here; .

It snowed this past Sunday on Mother's Day. Matter of fact, the only month that has never seen snow falling in da Keweenaw is August. Which begs us to tell you all about our four seasons; Early Winter, Mid Winter, Late Winter, and Next Winter!

With that, our Board of Directors and Race Planning Team will meet once more in early June to close-out the season before we pick it all back up in early September.

New things in store? Is that a trick question?

EDIT: "I have seen snow fall in August…enough to make snowballs off of cars!" -- Peggy Lanctot-Kauppi
