I heard those exact words chasing my own goal, becoming the first Chick-fil-A Operator in New York City.

I took it the way most people do. Like someone had decided I wasn’t good enough.

I was wrong about what those two words meant.

Everyone wants the version of the story where it worked out.

Fewer people ask what it took to move before it was guaranteed to.

I sat with attorneys before buying a multifamily property in New York, intending to house my leaders in it.

One of them told me “no good deed goes unpunished”.

He wasn’t wrong about the risk.
He just couldn’t see the vision — so I didn’t hire him.

I still did the work.

Homework, pros and cons, real counsel, a Plan B in case it went sideways.

That’s the difference between reckless and ready.

Today that property is stability for people I lead, in one of the hardest housing markets in the country.

Not every return shows up on a balance sheet.

My brother. My aunts and uncles. My mom.

The exposure was never just mine to keep.

A message crossed my desk that took one word to tell me everything.

One of my sharpest young leaders sent a manager with nearly two decades of tenure a correction by email.

Nothing in it was wrong.

New procedure, missed rollout, professional tone throughout.

The reply was one word.
“𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘥.”

No pushback.
No questions.
Just everything they weren’t willing to put in an email.

When I asked why they didn’t just pick up the phone, the answer was honest:
“𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵. 𝘈 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘨𝘰 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘨𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘵 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥.”

That’s not a communication problem.
