South Fork Bishop Creek. Fly fishing Bishop Creek and Weir pond in the fall with fall colors as a back drop and spawning browns and brook trout is a great way to spend an afternoon. The key to fly fishing the creek is to walk the banks of the creek looking for the pools and pockets where the trout are waiting to eat what floats by. This is the perfect place to fish a dry and dropper rig. Use your favorite dry fly and your favorite nymph. I like a size 14 stimulator and a size 16 green/gold brassie. Sept-Oct starts in a week. Do you have your Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing trip planned. Sierra Bright Dot guides have availability and would love to teach you the fly fishing techniques that produce trout in the Eastern Sierra during Sept-Oct.

Ducks on the water. While being on the water fly fishing it allows us to enjoy the beauty and wild life that depends on the waters we fish. Remember to look up and enjoy the surroundings that you are fly fishing. Take only photos. Leave only foot prints. Keep the waters pristine by picking up trash.

Float tubing Crowley Lake. Old school fly fishing on Crowley Lake. Before fly fishing guides introduced the comforts of fly fishing out of boats fly fishers use to float tube the lake. At one point in time the lake closed to boating on Labor day. That’s when fly fishers did not have to compete with the boats when float tubing Crowley Lake in the Fall. Trolling streamers like olive matukas and olive wooly buggers in size 8 produced trout while kicking out to the w**d beds. Once at the w**d beds casting matukas on sink tip lines into the holes in the w**d beds produced trophy brown and rainbow trout. Spent the day showing Michael how to float tube Crowley Lake from a float tube. Crowley Lake is under voluntary hoot owl restrictions. Water temperatures are over 70 degrees before noon. As the water temperatures increase over 70 degrees the mortality rate for catch and release trout fly fishing greatly increases. Carry a thermometer and quit catch and release fly fishing when water temperatures approach 70 degrees.

Bishop Creek Canal. DWP dredged the canal this spring. They’ve now removed all the dredging from the road and opened up more parking opportunities. Hoppers are showing up on the vegetation next to the canal. Water temperatures are to hot to fish hoppers in the afternoon winds that blow hoppers onto the water. Look for cooler mid-day water temperatures as we head into September. Use a thermometer to tell when water temperatures get too hot for catch and release fly fishing.

Hopper season. Anticipated every summer by Eastern Sierra fly fishers. It’s been non existent for several years. Been seeing hoppers in stream side vegetation, particularly grasses. The creeks of Long Valley have been offering fly fishers grasshopper fly fishing opportunities. Fish in the afternoon winds when the hoppers are being blown onto the water. Cast your hopper imitations close to the bank where the wind is coming from. If your fly lands on the bank just gently pull it into the water and be ready for a trout to take your fly. Use size 12 tan Chernobyl ants, size 12 Dave hopper and size 12 tan stimulators. Be aware of afternoon water temperatures as there are still voluntary hoot owl regulations in effect for Eastern Sierra waters.
