I don't know all the details. I don't see how he could have skied the top of Dropout 2 with all the exposed rock at the choke point, but the double black diamonds can be deadly when too firm or icy.

FOURTH DEATH ON MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN THIS SEASON REPORTED BY THE Los Angeles Times
The Los Angeles Times reported today (2/6) that a skier died on an expert run on Mammoth Mountain Thursday following a fatal accident. It is the fourth death on the mountain this season.
The skier has not been identified pending notification of their next of kin, but Mammoth Mountain executives apparently confirmed the death to The L.A. Times in an email this morning.
According to eyewitness reports, the skier was on the steep Dropout 2 run, fell, popped out of his skis and slid headfirst for hundreds of yards.
Ski patrollers reached the victim within five minutes of the accident; he was unconscious and unresponsive, the L.A. Times said. Paramedics transported the victim to Mammoth Hospital, according to mountain officials, who later received word that he had died.
Other deaths this season include 71-year-old skier Raymond Albert, known to fellow skiing enthusiasts as “Every Day Ray,” who died Christmas Day; 30-year-old ski patroller Cole Murphy who died in an avalanche on Dec. 26; and a snowboarder who died of an apparent head injury on Jan. 16, according to The L.A. Times. A GoFundMe fundraiser created Jan. 24 identifies the snowboarder as Sebastian Celaya Salcido, 25.
