Bookkeepers hear this question all the time:
“What can I do to save on taxes?”

Before jumping into deductions, there may be a better question:
“What is the client trying to accomplish?”

Hiring?
Growing?
Increasing cash reserves?
Buying equipment?
Preparing for retirement?

Once we understand the goal, we can make sure the client's financial information is ready for a productive conversation with their tax professional.

Planning helps determine the right action.

Deadlines are easy to put on a calendar.

Good decisions require more.

Before a client makes the next estimated payment, their advisory team needs to understand what's actually happening in the business.

That's where bookkeepers make an enormous contribution.

Current books.

Clear documentation.

Questions surfaced early.

Reliable information.

We're not just recording what already happened.

We're helping create the financial foundation clients and their advisors need to decide what happens next.

Bookkeeping.

Taxes.

Business planning.

Personal financial planning.

Clients may think of these as separate conversations.

But the financial information connects all of them.

That's why good advisor collaboration matters.

Our job isn't to become a CPA, attorney, or financial advisor.

It's to provide accurate information, communicate clearly, and help make sure the right questions reach the right professional.

That's what being part of an advisory team looks like.

Owner Compensation & Financial Decisions: Crucial Business Moves

Your paycheck is a business decision.

How you pay yourself affects more than your personal income—it can impact cash flow, taxes, and the financial health of your business.

The goal isn’t simply to take more money out. It’s to build a compensation strategy that supports both your current needs and your long-term growth. 💡

Your client may ask:
"How much do I need to pay?"

But that question can open a much bigger conversation

How is the business performing?

Does the client have enough cash available?

What has changed since the last projection?

Are there major purchases or decisions coming?

Does the CPA need updated information?

Great bookkeepers recognize when the numbers are telling us it's time to bring another advisor into the conversation.

👇 What's your signal that it's time to tell a client, "We should loop in your CPA"?

Bookkeepers sometimes underestimate how important our work is to tax planning.

A CPA can't make a reliable projection from books that are three months behind.

They need:
• reconciled accounts
• accurate income and expenses
• properly recorded payroll
• documented major purchases
• clear owner transactions
• questions identified and resolved

We don't have to be the tax strategist to be an essential part of the tax-planning process.

Good strategy needs good data.

A client's estimated payment may have made perfect sense three months ago.

That doesn't mean it's still the right number today.

Maybe sales took off.

Maybe a major customer disappeared.

Maybe payroll increased.

Maybe expenses changed dramatically.

When we keep financials current, clients and their tax professionals can respond to what's actually happening not what everyone thought would happen months ago.

September 15 is approaching, and many clients will be thinking about estimated taxes.

This is where bookkeepers can provide tremendous value without stepping outside our scope.

Before the deadline:

✔ Get the books current.
✔ Finish reconciliations.
✔ Identify unresolved transactions.
✔ Make sure unusual items are documented.
✔ Encourage the client to contact their tax professional if business performance has changed materially.

The bookkeeper doesn't calculate the tax strategy.

We make sure the people who do have reliable numbers.

That's teamwork.

The tax estimate your client's CPA calculated earlier this year was based on information available at the time.

But businesses change.

Revenue grows.

Margins shrink.

Payroll changes.

Equipment gets purchased.

Unexpected expenses happen.

That's why current bookkeeping matters.

You aren't responsible for determining your client's tax strategy.

But you can make sure their tax professional has accurate, timely information to work with.

👇 How current are your clients' books right now?
