POSE OF THE MONTH – SIDDHASANA
Perfect Pose
This month we turn our attention to Siddhasana – a classical seated asana that may look simple from the outside, yet offers a rich field for practice.
In Siddhasana, the legs are folded and the pelvis is grounded while the spine rises upward. The pose asks us to find a balance between stability and lightness, effort and quietness.
In Iyengar Yoga, seated asanas are not simply positions in which we sit. Through careful work with the legs, pelvis, trunk and spine, we learn to create the stability and freedom that allow us to remain seated with greater ease and awareness.
Geeta Iyengar emphasised the importance of seated postures, including Siddhasana, for developing freedom in the knees and learning to sit comfortably for longer periods.
As the body becomes quieter and the spine more naturally upright, attention can gradually turn inward. This makes the practice of seated asanas an important foundation for Pranayama and meditation.
Throughout this month we will explore Siddhasana in our classes – observing the feet and legs, creating space in the hips, finding an even base for the pelvis and learning how to lift the spine without creating unnecessary tension.
And as always in Iyengar Yoga, the pose can be adapted with blankets, blocks or other supports so that each practitioner can work with greater precision and stability.
Sometimes the quietest-looking asanas have the most to teach us.
Take your seat.
Find your foundation.
Lengthen the spine.
Become quiet enough to observe.
See you on the mat!
