Despite the occasional typhoon and rainy days in February, the month turned out pretty fab!

Learning never stops, no matter your age.
We celebrated 8 new SSI Instructors on the island, took a 9-year-old Scuba Explorer on some exciting underwater adventures, and had a 65-year-old student upgrade to Advanced Open Water!

And of course, a big shoutout to our fun divers — despite the cold rains and chilly waters, the diving definitely did not disappoint.

Tanks for choosing to dive with DiverGems!

With effect from 6 February, the Tabango government has officially established Kimud Shoal as a Marine Protected Area (MPA).

This initiative aims to promote the protection, conservation, and sustainable management of the dive site and its marine inhabitants, while supporting inclusive and sustainable tourism.

Below are the new rules and regulations implemented at Kimud Shoal. By working together, we can continue to experience the incredible privilege of seeing thresher sharks wild and up close—while ensuring their habitat remains healthy and protected for generations to come.

Travellers from all over the world visit Malapascua for this rare encounter. As humans, it is of utmost importance to respect the inhabitants of the ocean—we are merely its visitors.

Quit playing games with our hearts, Mother Nature!
January 2026 kept us on our toes—sunny days one moment, typhoons and dive cancellations the next.

We’re grateful to have made it through and even more grateful to the divers who still reached our island.

To those who couldn’t make it because of the weather, we hope to sea you next time for epic dives!

It’s been a series of strong winds, bad weather and lots of ups and downs the past week- read: strong winds, no boats, no diving!

While it’s been stressful and a huge disappointment for both our divers and us too, safety is our utmost priority and the last thing we want is for our guests to be stranded with no boats and no diving 😮‍💨

Here’s to better days ahead, featuring some of the crew hard at work behind the scenes!

Drop a comment to say hi if you spot someone you know! 📝

Cuttlefish have one of the most fascinating and complex mating behaviours in the ocean

During the courtship, male cuttlefishes flash intense, high-contrast patterns like zebra stripes or pulsing waves These signal strength, health, and dominance to females—and warnings to intimidate the other male rival. Size, brightness and confidence often decides the winner- who gets to mate with the female cuttlefish.

When a female is receptive, the male uses a specialised arm to pass s***m packets into a pouch near the female’s mouth. Mating can last from a few seconds to several minutes. However, females can store s***m from multiple males and may selectively use it later—meaning the “winner” of the colour battle isn’t always the father. 🫣

After mating, females lay eggs in crevices or on reef structures, coating them in ink for camouflage. Once the eggs are laid, adults typically die shortly after, completing their short but intense life cycle.

Our divers (us included!) were definitely mesmerised by the cuttlefish mating battle for at least a good 5 minutes underwater!

Ornate ghost pipefishes are master camouflagers, drifting gracefully like seaweed, swaying in the waters. With their leaf-like fins, delicate patterns, and slow, graceful movements, they blend perfectly into crinoids, algae, and soft corals. Often seeing in pairs, we spotted a white & yellow pregnant mama with her male partner while macro hunting at Gato island!
