Where will your Open Water certification take you?

Malapascua is famed for the incredible pelagic thresher sharks but to protect this amazing site there are a few rules.

You must be at least Open Water certified to dive here, so if you’re doing your open water course on Malapascua make sure you plan your trip with time after your training dives to go to Kimud as well. If you’re already Open Water certified you may need to do a refresh or check dive before you can go see the sharks.

Kimud is a sunken island 45 - 60 minutes by boat from Malapascua, famous for pelagic thresher sharks but also home to schooling barracudas, jacks, colourful anthias, octopuses and so much more!

For over twenty years, our divers have surfaced shrieking "THRESHER!!!" and then, a week later, been unable to remember which day it was, which divemaster they were with, or any of the other incredible creatures they saw on the dive.

So we built an app.

Masters of Diving is your logbook, your creature ID book and a leaderboard, all on your phone. Every creature you see earns you points, and you win prizes along the way. Find the rarest creature, and you've completed your Thesis. Pass the exam and you've earned your Masters (yes, we went full university about it).

Start with Malapascua: threshers, mandarinfish, frogfish, and the whole cast of Kimud, Monad and Gato. As soon you surfance from the dive, you can log the dive on the boat and your divemaster will be tagged and can verify it from their account immediately. Then go worldwide with Sharks, Nudibranchs (113 of them, good luck), Seahorses, Tropical Fish, Macro and more. More points unlock more tracks.

Every creature has its own page with a photo and everything worth knowing about it. Many of the photos were taken by divers who came through our doors, and every one carries the photographer's name. You can add your own photos to any creature's page, and chat with other divers on every page. Our community pages are new, but will grow quickly.

And no, you don't have to come to Malapascua. Log what you see in Bali, the Red Sea or your local quarry (good luck finding a nudibranch in a quarry). Although we'd love to see you, obviously.

*Thank you to the dozens of people who have helped build this app over the last months, from the divemasters who checked every creature to the divers who tested it on the boat and told us (very frankly!!) what was wrong with it.
