Hello Porirua boating community. In case you weren’t aware, there is a large southerly storm coming with winds gusting to 60 knots on Sunday night and Monday. If you have a boat moored at the pole moorings in the channel we request (beg?) that you please go out to your boat today and put an extra line on the southern pole to avoid what happens every year… boats breaking old mooring lines, coming adrift, smashing each other up, sinking or grounding. Please don’t expect us to put our volunteers in danger because “Coastguard will sort it out”. It doesn’t work like that and we can’t do salvage jobs. Also, if you have your stern currently facing the south then it would be a good idea to spin your boat around as there have been numerous vessels swamped/sunk from the large waves that roll down through the channel in a big southerly. And the Harbour Master doesn’t like that 😁.

If you are on a swing mooring in the channel, or in the marina, we encourage you to check your lines as well.

Stay safe everyone! We are here to save lives at sea, but your moored boat is your responsibility.
