RIP Jack Newson 🖤🤍

Jack was the patron of our club, a massive supporter of boxing and rugby league in Canterbury and a very close friend of Phil’s. A few words from him below.

“My good friend Jack Newson passed away on Tuesday.
I first met Jack when we both worked at the Islington freezing works. During this time he asked Mike Pimley and me if we would train his two sons, Hemi and Linkoln, at our boxing gym. Both boys went on to box at the highest levels, and that was the beginning of a friendship with Jack that lasted many years.
Over those years, our families shared a lot together. We even spent Christmas dinner together with the Newson family, which is something I will always remember fondly.
Jack had a great love for boxing and was a tremendous supporter of the Papanui and Riverside Boxing Clubs, where we are very proud to have him as our patron.
I often called Jack “the gentleman”, and I think that summed him up very well. He was a truly kind and generous man who gave an enormous amount of his time to the people and sports he cared about.
Jack's greatest passion was Rugby League, and he was an absolute legend at the Hornby Rugby League Club. He handmade all of the weights and much of the other equipment for the club, and his commitment went far beyond that. He would be there watching every Hornby team he could, from the young kids right through to the Premiers and everything in between.
His contribution was recognised in 2018 when he was named the New Zealand Rugby League Volunteer of the Year - an honour he thoroughly deserved.
Jack enjoyed a beer and a joke, and his second home was the Hornby Working Men’s Club.
Jack was one of those people who became part of the fabric of the community around him. He gave his time generously, supported people wholeheartedly and remained a loyal friend for many, many years.
I feel very fortunate to have been able to call Jack one of my best friends.
He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
Rest in peace Jack”.

The time has come for to hang up the gloves and focus on the next chapter of his life. We want to take this opportunity to thank Thomas for his contributions to the club over the better part of a decade.

Thomas has been the captain of our club, the standard setter, the backbone of Riverside for at least the last 4 years, and a member of our club since 2016. You’d be hard pressed to find someone that works harder, wants it more, or fights like a man possessed more than this guy. A relentless, come forward warrior who never backed away from a challenge. It’s been a hell of a ride, one for the history books, and one we will never forget. Winning the Jameson Belt last year was the ultimate icing on the cake, an accomplishment 99% of boxers in NZ will never do. A small snippet of highlights below.

Can’t beat Wellington on a good day! Team turned up at Wellington Champs this weekend, flight delays, driving across the North Island, nothing was stopping us from getting in that ring! A massive mihi to our whānau for their hospitality, their help accommodating us and our travel needs, and bringing the fierce competition! Results below 👇

🥈Jostien had some great moments where what we’ve been working on the last couple weeks came through, but a slow work rate cost us the nod. This will be a great rematch in a fortnight.

🥇 Finlay put on his best display yet, boxing beautifully to a UD win. 6 fights now, 6 wins. How good! There’s more to this story too, I’ll save the best news for last.

🥇Ryan handled a big puncher very very well, found his shots well and executed the game plan perfectly. He weathered a late surge from his opponent to get back in the winners column. Bloody proud of this performance.

🥈Shannon was matched with the defending Wellington champ, and took a hell of a fight to him, he stuck to the plan well but a bit of difficulty making weight cost us the extra juice we needed for the win. Quick turnaround with NZ Golden Gloves to look forward to next weekend with some more North Island Opponents to boogey with.

🥇 Charlie handled his first southpaw opponent perfectly to a come away with a great win. Unsure how that one was a split decision but it went the right way that’s all that matters.

🥈 Ahmad had the best performance we’ve seen from him yet, mixing beautiful movement with good combination punching, he controlled the bout start to finish. We were very suprised to hear the decision go against us, we’d love to run this one back on home soil. Nothing to be ashamed of here Habibi you fought your ass off.

🏆 Finlay Morris - Most Scientific Boxer Overall!!! Well deserved mate, you put on an absolute clinic!
🏆 Coach Matt - Trainer of the Most Scientific Boxer. A nice reward for the mahi he’s put in from day dot with Finlay.

All in all very proud of our results, we wanted a challenge and we got that in every bout. It’s why we travel north when we can. No rest for the wicked, we go again next weekend. 👊🏽

Clean sweep for the lads last night on the Canterbury vs Top Of The South event 🥇🥇🥇

🥇Lucas gave up some weight to secure a bout and showed a massive improvement from his last bout with much improved defence, work rate and composure. A great UD win. 6 fights and 4 wins in the last 3 months, an awesome start to his boxing journey.

🥇Jostien up next defending the Jack Grant Belt. Another much improved display finding his flow a lot better last night than his last outing. He showed class, focus and a bit of that power came through finally, dropping his opponent in the 2nd round. A bloody good showing from the big man.

🥇Shannon stepped up to light heavyweight on a week’s notice, we rolled the dice, took a gamble and it paid off. Shannon stuck to the plan really well, showed patience, ring IQ and fire at the right times to get the win. A couple of pretty soft 8 counts left a sour taste in the mouth but the decision was never in doubt.

Our focus last night was to put in to practice what we’ve been drilling in the gym and it came through perfectly. A good night at the office in preparation for Wellington Champs next weekend, we’re back on the road. 👊🏽
