Nearly the end of our busy season at Port Gore, we have had some great dives and groups this summer and looking forward to next season. Thanks to all of you who have joined us over the summer. Still the odd trip through the winter though if you are keen. A few images from the last few weeks, showing the contrast and beauty of the area.

Awesome weekend with Dave’s Dive Club from Kaikoura. Buzzed by dolphins U/W on the Lermy, took photos of five different species of Nudibranchs, one I haven’t seen before on the wreck, octopus, carpet sharks, King fish, just to mention a few fishy encounters. Well organised group.

Perfect start to another days diving in Port Gore, five days of near perfect weather and conditions. Other than patches of biological soup on the Lermontov, visibility wasn’t to bad. Jack Mackerel making the most of the soup with them in the water column right to the surface, much to the delight of some very large King Fish and bottlenose dolphins. Thanks to the VSAG group from Aussie for a great few days diving.

The Alpha dive flag — officially the International Code of Signals flag A — traces its roots back to the 19th century, when maritime nations needed a universal way to communicate at sea despite language barriers. The International Code of Signals was first published in 1857 and later standardised to improve global safety.

In that system, the letter “A” (Alpha) means: “I have a diver down; keep well clear at slow speed.” It became the official diving signal because commercial and military diving operations needed a clear, internationally recognised warning to passing vessels.

Unlike the red-and-white diver down flag (mainly used in North America), the Alpha flag is recognised worldwide under maritime regulations. Its rigid, swallow-tailed shape isn’t decorative — it helps the flag stand out clearly from a vessel, even in changing sea conditions.

A simple blue and white flag — but backed by over 150 years of maritime safety history. ⚓️🤿

Four decades resting in the Marlborough Sounds — never forgotten.

Been a great weekend celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Mikhail Lermontov Wreck with a great crowd coming from all over NZ and AUS. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t “summer” weather, but that didn’t stop the crowd from seeing what she has to offer!
Thanks to all those which came along to celebrate 40 years of great diving on one of the best wrecks out there.
Ps. Thanks to the Ausies for bringing along the flu to share with the group 🤪

It’s been a very busy week at Port Gore, some great conditions and some new divers. Congratulations to Kate Spencer and Leander Bahlsen on completing their SSI Open water training and Sarah Connolly on her SSI Advanced O/W, All taught by Connor. Thanks to Maia, Sue for your help and to Star for his great surface support. Looking forward to next weekend, the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the Mikhail.
