The Sprig + Fern Brewing Co. Walking Football Nelson league is hotting up and halfway through term 2, the teams once again battled it out. The Sprig team took the honors on the night, with 3 wins and a loss, and look to now build on their form and get themselves off the bottom of the ladder. At the other end, continue to stay in first place. Comfortably? The next 6 weeks will tell...

Legend of the night went to Meghan (Moo Too) Jamieson, with a stunning performance. Her and JV were seen looking into the knee brace for proof of an award beverage as it was completely forgotten last week. There was something there, and Meghan went home early.

Last night in the Sprig + Fern Brewing Co. Walking Football Nelson sponsors league, we saw 21 goals being scored between the 5 teams and secure themselves comfortably at the top of the table. With 7 weeks of the term to go though, are they safe...

In the photos this week, there's always those kids since the age of 5 who just can't work out which way around the bib goes. Clearly, they haven't improved over the years! And Julian (hairy spag) Kett shows off his 10-pin bowling technique when distributing the ball from goal to one of his players. Needless to say, the ball was thrown at a tremendous pace and was not controlled easily by the defender! There's really no need for that sort of force at walking football, but it is JK after all...

And there was no knee brace handed over this week as last week's recipient didn't acknowledge the rules and replace the "beverage" inside the brace with a new one. He did however remove the drink that he was awarded last week and placed it in his fridge - not thinking it may have been there for a reason and that perhaps he should replace it ready to be handed on to the next legend. Oh well, Dave (the repairman) Sweetman will learn for next time!

The after-match rehydration session was held at Sprig + Fern The Meadows and the mushroom pizzas were amazing!

Just the one change in positions after Wednesday nights Sprig + Fern Brewing Co. Walking Football Nelson session. And although Honda Store Nelson and Absolute Energy share the same points, Absolute unfortunately didn’t win a game all night so Honda sneak above them.

Silky Saws - New Zealand, Homes by Orange, and stay in their same spots for now.

We had 5 teams on the night, with a couple of them having subs, so our membership numbers are good at this stage of the year, and as we move into darker nights and colder temperatures, being inside makes it all the better! However, we didn't see our newest members Mr Ian Coles and Mr Ross Alvy? Have they given up already...

Player of the Night was Dave (The Repairman) Berryman, showing a consistent and continued improved performance. Well done Dave.

We've got off to a great start to Term 2 of the Sprig + Fern Brewing Co. Walking Football Nelson league and with new players coming along, and current players returning from injury, it's looking like a memorable term. Those of you who know that names Colesy and Alvy, will know who we're talking about, and we're stoked they've come to join us. And one of the cow's returned after nearly a year off from her knee injury - it was great to see Fern "Moo" Walton back! She also likes showing off in the group photos just a little bit as well...

Henk "Rowdy" Droppers took away the knee brace for an outstanding performance and the new 'reserved' signs at the Sprig + Fern Tahuna were easy to find.

We had a great after match rehydration session - cheers guys.

That's a wrap for Term 1 of the Sprig + Fern Brewing Co. Walking Football Nelson sponsors league and congratulations to for taking out the top prize. They're leading the pack by quite a bit, but the others will be back next term very keen to hunt them down...

Thanks to all the who have hosted us over the past 8 weeks for our rehydration sessions. It's important for athletes to have the correct warm-down and stretches to stay in top shape.

Congratulations also to Chris Bentley who was awarded the knee brace last week, and to Richard Griffith who received it last night. Richard's prize was to take the playing bibs home to wash over term break.

The other photos show great mates Michael and Deano finally getting to play in the same team, and Simon clearly finding something Ged said quite funny. And Ged is clearly pretty happy with himself.

We'll be back on Wednesday 22nd April for Term 2 and already looking forward to it. And for those still kicking the round ball in senior "outdoor" football, the local league kicks off next weekend (11th April) and all the divisions draws are now out on thewww.nelsonbaysfootball.co.nz website. Good luck to all the clubs and teams for this coming winter. If that's a little too extreme for you though, don't forget walking football!!

Quick update for the last 2 weeks! Lots of positions changed. New leader. And the legend that is Matt Watson joined us for his debut - and then won the knee-brace. The referees just said they gave it to him to encourage him to come back next week. Nice one Matty... and the other photo shows Richard winning the knee-brace the week before. Legends...

Well, we're back for 2026 and have returned to the girl's college gym for Term 1. It's been a quiet start to the new season, but the games have been just as close as always and after 2 weeks last year's sponsors league winners, Absolute Energy have taken the early lead. The rest have some ground to make up, but it's very early days and this won't be the final positions!! Week 1 saw Meghan take the first knee brace of the year and also the first goal of 2026! Week 2 and it was Renee who showed his class to take the prize.

Trying to get in some outdoor 'summer sessions' during the xmas break and the weather hasn't played ball over the last few Wednesday evenings. But last night we finally got on a dry and flat field and had a great night during a sunny evening. The after match was straight to the . Another few outdoor weeks before returning to the College Gym and we're back into it for the 2026 season.

And that’s s wrap for the 2025 S+F WFN season. We finished with our annual ‘jingle balls’ session with everyone getting into the spirit and then had our awards night hosted at the S+F Meadows.
