The opening race of the weekend for the NZ Porsche Racing Championship is in the books!

We had the gold-and-white and bronze-and-white coloured Cup cars of Nick Cutfield and Daniel Angus looking glamorous as they took up their spots on the front row of the grid for the first race of the Manfeild weekend. As the lights went out, Angus got a beautifully timed start to lead the field into Turn One. Behind him, Robert D**g bobbled slowly out of his grid spot, resulting in dramatic TV images of the red car of Iain Hill diving around the side to avoid collecting Robert.

Cutfield was in close pursuit of Daniel for a lap or two until he got a better run out of Higgins Corner and lined up a beautifully timed pass going into the sweeper at the end of the back straight.

Behind the front two, Duncan McCrostie and newcomer Dallas Alexander were locked into a race-long battle for third and fourth place. Dallas tried to line up passes on both sides of Duncan’s car, but with some cool defensive driving, Duncan held onto third place.

Iain Hill was relatively unchallenged as the first of the non-Cup cars to take the chequered flag, followed by Chris Barendregt.

Probably the most spectacular race performance came from Chris Taylor, who started from dead last in his 2.7 Boxster. Chris threaded his way through the field until he reached Kelly McEwan, who was holding first in class. We then watched sustained pressure from Taylor before a missed gear change by McEwan gave Taylor the opportunity to slip past on the final lap to take the chequered flag for the class win.

Ashton McCaughan had a great race against his dad Mark in their identical 2.5 Boxsters, but as is becoming the habit, Ashton again took the honours in their class.

At the front in the Cup cars, the finishing order was Cutfield, followed by Angus, then McCrostie, Alexander and D**g.

With two more thrilling races coming up tomorrow, you won’t want to miss a moment of the action. The first race gets underway at 9:30am, opening the day with another 20-minute contest, before the 30-minute Enduro begins at 12:57pm.

Both races will be available to watch live on Sky Sport (NZ) and YouTube.
