POLICE PERMITS ARE STILL NEEDED UNTIL 1/4/2028! READ BELOW FOR MORE!

Repealing the Boxing and Wrestling Act was made under the Regulatory Systems (Internal Affairs) Amendment Act 2026.

Sections 19 to 22 are the sections to Repeal the Boxing and Wrestling Act.

The Regulatory Systems (Internal Affairs) Amendment Act 2026 received Royal assent, which means the decision to Repeal has been made by the government.

However, according to Section 2 of the Regulatory Systems (Internal Affairs) Amendment Act 2026 subsection (2)(a)(i) and (2)(a)(ii) repealing the Boxing and Wrestling Act comes into force on either the 1 April 2028 or by an Order in Council.

An Order in Council has not been made, so the Current Boxing and Wrestling Act is still active until at most the 1 April 2028.

This is a long way of saying, police permits are still required whānau until either the 1 April 2028 or there is an Order in Council made by the govt.

We know! It's confusing for us too! But as we work it out, we'll let you know too.

What a special day yesterday's announcement was!

Thanks heaps to The NZ Team for organising the event and all the support behind the scenes to get us to the announcement.

A huge mihi to previous Games boxing medalists Lance Revill, Shane Cameron and Troy Garton for being there to hand the ferns to the athletes.

A massive shout out to the Board of Boxing NZ and the High Performance committee for all the work behind the scenes to get the athletes nominated for selection by the NZOC.

Congratulations to the athletes. Without you, there is no Boxing NZ. You did the hardwork to get here. Which is fortunate, because there's heaps more hardwork to come!

Finally, the most important mihi to the whānau, the home coaches and the supporters for the tautoko you provide to the athletes and our sport. Our sport is run on sausage sizzles, car washes and the smell of an oily rag.

Thank you.

Glasgow, here we come.

🚨🚨LEGISLATION CHANGE!🚨🚨

Over the weekend the Boxing and Wrestling Act 1981 was repealed by the Govt.

This doesn't change anything for us in Amateur Boxing.

Amateur Boxing in NZ is still regulated and sanctioned under Boxing NZ.

Boxing NZ as an entity is still sanctioned and regulated under World Boxing.

World Boxing is the recognised International Federation governing the sport of amateur boxing at world level by the IOC.

As Combat Sports have increased in number the landscape has changed from 1981 when the Act was first created. There are a multitude of combat codes, athletes are multi-disciplined, and the combat event space is running rampant.

We're not too sure what the replacement regulatory framework should look like, but bottom line for Boxing NZ, is we have to protect athletes.

Whatever happens, Boxing NZ is committed to making sure our Boxing community voice is at the forefront of engagement on this topic in the future.

A huge shout out to our volunteers who turn up every year to help run and participate in Golden Gloves in the North and South Island. There are too many to name! (and take photos of!)

Our sport is run on volunteers. From the grass roots clubs, managers, coaches, officials, organisers, supporters, all the way to the board.

All unpaid. All doing it for the love. Year in, and year out.

Awesome work this year! Keep up the good work at the club/association tournaments. We'll see everyone all together again at the Nationals in Whanganui!
