Eight years ago I wrote about one of the proudest moments of our lives — watching Seb and his sailing partner Blake, aged just 13 and 15, win the 420 World Sailing Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.
At the time, it felt like an incredible achievement from such humble beginnings through the Learn to Sail programme at Murrays Bay Sailing Club.
Fast forward to today, and it is hard to put into words how proud we are again — Seb and his sailing partner George Lee Rush has now gone on to win the 49er World Championships in Quiberon, France. Not only that, they are now the YOUNGEST 49er world champions in history! 🌍🥇🇳🇿
What makes it even more special is seeing the journey behind it. Learn-to-sail boats at Murrays Bay Sailing Club, to years of commitment, resilience, personal challenges, setbacks, travel and relentless hard work — all leading to representing New Zealand and standing on top of the world again.
It also reinforces something I have always believed: when young people are given opportunity, support and encouragement, extraordinary things can happen.
As both a parent and long-time supporter of junior sailing through , moments like this are incredibly special to witness.
Huge congratulations Seb and the entire team behind him. We could not be prouder.
