You can eat well, sleep well and exercise regularly — and still have cardiovascular risks you don’t know about.
A recent report by Free Malaysia Today highlighted the case of a 33-year-old woman weighing barely 40kg, with no known medical issues, who was found to have 70–80% blockage in one of her blood vessels and high cholesterol that had previously gone undetected.
According to cardiologist Dr Chua Ping Lik, cases of coronary artery blockages are increasingly being seen in people in their 30s and 40s. His message is simple: being fit isn’t enough.
And this is where we need to look beyond the obvious.
Your heart and cardiovascular health are influenced by more than what you eat and how much you exercise. Chronic stress, insufficient recovery and prolonged emotional strain can all place additional load on the body.
Sometimes, we respond to stress or grief by doing more — staying busy, exercising harder, constantly pushing forward — without giving the body enough time to rest, regulate and recover.
From a TCM perspective, prolonged strain may deplete Yin Qi, the body’s capacity to nourish, cool and restore. When Qi flow becomes constrained, it can contribute to what TCM describes as Qi and Blood Stagnation.
From a modern physiology perspective, chronic stress can keep the nervous system in a heightened state, affecting sleep, recovery, inflammation and cardiovascular health.
More exercise isn’t always better — especially when your body is already under stress.
Health isn’t just about how strong or fit you look.
It’s also about how well your body can recover, regulate and restore.
