Roscommon went in at half-time five points down, trailing 1-09 to 0-07, playing against the breeze in the opening half.
The second half began brightly with a superb two-pointer from Diarmuid Murtagh, giving the Rossies hope of a comeback. However, Monaghan then took control of possession and starved Roscommon of the ball for long periods, dictating the tempo of the game.
Mark Dowd rang the changes from the bench, including the introduction of Enda Smith, but it proved to be in vain as Monaghan maintained their grip on the contest and ran out deserving winners.
Unfortunately, that brings an end to a wonderful journey with this team, one that began back in January when we travelled to Killarney for the opening round of the National League.
It has been a privilege to follow this group throughout the year. While the result did not go our way today, the team retained their Division 1 status, captured the Connacht Championship for the first time since 2019, and completed a historic treble of Connacht titles across u17, u20 and Senior — a first for Roscommon football.
It is not the way we wanted the story to end, but Mark Dowd, his management team and the players have represented Roscommon with pride throughout 2026.
A special word must also go to the Rossie supporters. Your backing throughout the year has been immense. Week after week, you turned up and stood behind the team, providing unwavering support through every high and low.
Thank you for your dedication, your passion and your belief.
