STOP CALLING THEM TRIALS.

As a kid, we never called them trials.

We called them training opportunities.

I missed out.

I was released.

I trained with some incredible clubs and learned that one session never defines a goalkeeper.

So why do we make 10 and 11-year-olds feel like their dream is over?

Maybe we don’t need fewer opportunities.

Maybe we just need to stop calling them trials.

Off-season hits and it's meant to be the time to switch off.
But the adrenaline disappears and you suddenly feel like you've been hit by a train.
Every off-season I've had has looked different — international duty, Covid uncertainty, weighing up a move with no agent, just me and my dad making calls. Every one taught me something about recovery, patience, and learning to be something other than a footballer for a while.
Recovery doesn't always look the same. Sometimes it's a beach in New Zealand. Sometimes it's a cricket pitch in Portishead.
And if you're young — don't spend the whole summer trying to be a footballer. Go and be a kid. The game will still be there when you come back.

🟢 DAY 9 OF 1,460 | THE SENIOR DEBUT

Some football stories never leave you.

At 17, I signed for the biggest club in Hawke’s Bay after a phone call that changed everything.

I wasn’t even meant to play.

My dad wasn’t meant to be playing either.

Yet somehow, on the same day, in the same city, he kept a clean sheet while I came on as an emergency winger and scored a last-minute equaliser.

Fifteen years later, people still talk about that goal.

Football has a funny way of deciding what moments last forever.

Sometimes the memories that shape you are the ones you never planned.

Day 8 of 1,460

People see the four venues, the events and the sponsors.

They don’t see the Friday nights on a training pitch with a handful of goalkeepers and an idea.

When I moved to Altrincham, Ross Speight helped me get those first sessions going. Ben was one of the parents watching from the side. Before long, we were building Keepers Only together.

No big plan.

Just a belief that goalkeepers deserved something built for them.

Now Ethan and I are proud to carry that on.

It started with a few goalkeepers on a training pitch.

It became Keepers Only. 🧤💚

Our adult sessions are designed for goalkeepers who want to prepare properly for the new season, whether you're playing Saturday football, Sunday league, grassroots or returning to the game after some time away.

Four years later and I still find myself asking the same question...

What if Woodsy's goal had stood?

This isn't just a story about a World Cup play-off.

It's about pressure.
It's about preparation.
It's about sacrifice.

And it's about a role that very few people ever talk about — being the third-choice goalkeeper.

Sometimes football gives you complete control over your destiny.

Sometimes it doesn't.

As the New Zealand boys begin another campaign, I can't help but think back to that night in Doha.
