Please welcome Wrexham Armed Forces Veterans Football Club who is a finalist in Veterans Group of the year category – Sponsored by Sierra Nevada Mission Systems UK

Being shortlisted for this award is a tremendous honour and something I am incredibly proud of, both personally and on behalf of everyone involved with Wrexham Armed Forces Veterans FC. To be recognised in this way is a reflection of the hard work, dedication and commitment shown by our players, volunteers, sponsors and supporters who have helped build the club into what it is today.
Our greatest achievement to date has been founding and developing Wrexham Armed Forces Veterans FC into a thriving and supportive community for veterans. What started as an idea to bring former service personnel together through football has grown into a club that provides friendship, camaraderie, wellbeing support and a sense of belonging for many veterans and their families. Seeing the positive impact the club has on people's lives, both on and off the pitch, is something I am immensely proud of. We are also extremely proud of raising over Β£12,500 for local charities in our first year.
Being shortlisted is recognition of the journey we have been on and the difference the club continues to make within the Wrexham veteran community. I am grateful for the opportunity and proud to represent such an outstanding group of people.

Wrexham Charity Cup 2026

Croes Howell Casuals FC 3 – 0 Wrexham Armed Forces Veterans FC

Under glorious sunshine and soaring temperatures at Llay Welfare Football Club, the annual Wrexham Charity Cup once again brought together football, friendship and community spirit as Croes Howell Casuals FC claimed a 3-0 victory over Wrexham Armed Forces Veterans FC.

While the scoreline favoured the hosts, the match itself was a highly competitive affair, with both teams playing some excellent football throughout the afternoon. Wrexham AFV FC worked tirelessly and created opportunities of their own, but Croes Howell proved more clinical in front of goal and ultimately deserved the win on the day.

The event was once again held in support of Hope House Children’s Hospices, with players, supporters, sponsors and volunteers all coming together to raise valuable funds for an incredible cause. The atmosphere throughout the day was fantastic, with a strong crowd enjoying the football and supporting the fundraising efforts.

We were honoured to welcome the Mayor of Wrexham and Armed Forces Champion Councillor Beverly Parry-Jones, alongside all of our match sponsors whose support helped make the day such a success. Their continued commitment to both the veteran community and local charitable causes is greatly appreciated.

Following the final whistle, both teams gathered in the Llay Welfare clubhouse to enjoy a well-earned drink before everyone moved on to the Croes Howell pub for a fantastic BBQ attended by players, families, friends and supporters.

The fundraising continued long into the evening with a hugely successful raffle featuring more than 45 fantastic prizes generously donated by local businesses and supporters. One of the highlights of the evening saw a Wales football shirt auctioned for hundreds of pounds, helping to boost the overall fundraising total even further.

This year’s result means the Wrexham Charity Cup now stands at one victory apiece between the two sides, ensuring that next year’s encounter will be eagerly anticipated as both teams look to gain the upper hand in this growing rivalry. Thankfully, coming together for such a worthwhile cause is always a pleasure, regardless of the result.

Most importantly, the day once again demonstrated the power of football to bring communities together, support veterans, and raise money for those who need it most.

From everyone at Wrexham Armed Forces Veterans FC, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to every sponsor, supporter, volunteer, organiser, player and family member who contributed to making the day such a tremendous success.

Together, you helped create a memorable event for an outstanding cause.

Thank you, and we’ll see you all again next year. βš½πŸ†

MATCH REPORT | Wrexham AFC Veterans 2–6 Strong Minds FC

Today’s Easter Sunday friendly saw Wrexham AFC Veterans travel to Llandudno FC’s ground to take on a strong Strong Minds FC side.

The lads started brightly and took a deserved lead on 16 minutes, showing intent and sharpness early on. However, Strong Minds responded well and turned things around before the break, sending us in 2–1 down at half-time.

The second half proved tough. With the wind firmly in their favour, Strong Minds came out with real intensity and pinned us back from the restart. Despite the team battling hard and continuing to play some good football, the pressure told and the home side added to their tally, with the match finishing 6–2.

Massive credit to both teams for getting the game on over Easter, especially with players missing due to holidays and several lads putting in their third game in four days β€” a proper shift all round.

⚽ Goalscorers:
Nathan Evans (Captain)
Phil Carr (on his debut πŸ‘)

πŸ”₯ Moment of the Match:
A brilliant debut moment from Buck, producing a classy outside-of-the-boot nutmeg that had everyone watching on.

As always, the game was played in great spirit and respect between both sides.

We go again. πŸ’ͺ

Wrexham Armed Forces Veterans FC hosted HMS Dragon today at Queensway Stadium in a fiercely contested, high-tempo encounter played in support of SANDS – the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity.

From the first whistle, both sides set the tone for what would become an enthralling battle for the Phoenix Lea Trophy, played in memory and with real meaning behind every tackle, run and challenge.

First Half Drama

The visitors struck early and capitalised on their momentum, racing into a 2–0 lead inside the opening 30 minutes. The hosts found themselves under pressure but refused to fold. True to veterans’ spirit, they regrouped, raised the tempo and clawed their way back into the contest.

Second Half Fightback

What followed was end-to-end football of the highest intensity. The Vets dug deep and started the half brightly, finding rhythm and belief. Shortly it was however 3-0. The Vets dug deep and brought the match back to 3-2 but it seemed every goal the Vets scored HMS DRAGON came back once again. Every goal was met with passion on the sidelines, both teams pushing hard in pursuit of silverware.

In the closing stages, HMS Dragon showed resilience of their own and ultimately edged the contest, finishing as 4–3 victors to lift the Phoenix Lea Trophy.

Respect beyond the result

At full time, football took its rightful place behind camaraderie and respect. Both teams formed up and applauded each other off the pitch β€” a fitting end to a match played in the right spirit for such an important cause.

HMS Dragon were worthy winners on the day, and we wish them well as they celebrate in Chester tonight and travel safely back to Portsmouth on Sunday.

After the Whistle

The competitive edge quickly gave way to laughter and unity as both squads headed to the Beaches Hotel for sausage, chips and a well-earned social β€” a reminder that days like this are about far more than the scoreline.

On our front, we keep battling. Performances like that show the character in this group. The wins will come.

We reset.
We go again on 22 March vs Wrexham Resilience.

Up the Vets. πŸ”΄βš½
