My daughter Saffy is getting to the age where she wants more independence.

And that got me thinking.

After more than 25 years coaching martial arts and personal safety, what would I actually want my own daughter to know before she starts doing more things without me?

That question became Capable Kids.

Today, I finished filming it.

8 short lessons. Not designed to make children frightened of the world, quite the opposite.

I want Saffy to be able to walk somewhere without me and know how to make good decisions when things don’t go exactly to plan.

What if her normal route is blocked?

What if she thinks someone is following her?

What if an adult tries to change the plan?

What if a friend pressures her into going somewhere she hasn’t agreed?

Where does she go when she genuinely needs help?

And what does she do in that rare, last-resort situation where somebody physically tries to stop her getting away?

Every lesson was written with the same question in my head:

“What would I want Saffy to know if I wasn’t there?”

Because ultimately, we can’t always be there.

And I don’t think preparing our children means making them scared.

It means making them capable.

Capable Kids. Coming 🔜

Not scared. Not paranoid. Prepared.

You don’t need to know someone is dangerous to put your safety first.

I think we get this badly wrong.

We tell people to “trust their instincts”, but then expect them to justify exactly what they’re worried about.

What did he do?
What did she say?
Why do you think something’s wrong?

Sometimes you won’t know.

Maybe somebody’s behaviour has changed.
Maybe their story doesn’t quite make sense.
Maybe they’re trying to get you somewhere you don’t want to go.

Maybe something simply feels off.

You don’t need enough evidence to convict somebody.

You need enough information to make a decision about your own safety.

Cross the road.
Leave.
Don’t go with them.
Call someone.
Ask for help.

And if it turns out you were completely wrong?

Good.

You haven’t accused them of anything.

You’ve simply protected your options.

I’d rather my daughter occasionally misjudge somebody than teach her she has to wait until she’s certain before she’s allowed to act.
