Yesterday marked the 160th birthday of the remarkable Beatrix Potter.

As I reflected on her life, it took me back exactly ten years.

For Beatrix Potter’s 150th anniversary, I had an idea. I wanted to bring her back to life for a new generation. I wanted people to see beyond the famous stories and discover the extraordinary woman she really was – an entrepreneur, conservationist, farmer and visionary whose courage and determination helped shape the Lake District we know and love today.

That idea became the short film “Celebrating Beatrix Potter”, which I had the privilege of writing and directing. Seeing clips of the film featured on BBC Breakfast, and being interviewed to talk about Beatrix’s incredible legacy, is something I’ll always be proud of.

Now, ten years later, it feels wonderfully fitting that I will once again be celebrating this inspirational woman.

I am delighted to be joining two incredible women, Catherine Connor and Diane Hannah, for the Lakes Legacy Festival panel discussion, “Women, Enterprise and Legacy in the Lake District,” on Friday 31 July at Windermere Library.

Beatrix Potter proved that one woman with vision, determination and courage can create a legacy that lasts for generations. I feel incredibly honoured to be part of an evening celebrating her life, her impact and the women continuing to make a difference today.
