Everyone agrees that what the world needs now is more emojis, right? ;-) To access your emoji keyboard, press the Windows Key + . (full stop) or Windows + ; (semi-colon) on Windows, and Cmd + Control + Spacebar on MacOS. You can scroll through all the available emojis and categories (People, Nature, Food & Drink, Celebration, Activity, Travel & Places, and Objects & Symbols) or search the full list of emojis from the search box at the top of the window.

If your PC is taking too long to boot, it may be because you are running too many programs at startup. You can easily block them for a quicker launch. On Windows, you can run the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then click the Startup tab. Click any program in the list then click the Disable button to prevent it from running on startup.

On a Mac, you can block startup applications by going to System Preferences > Users & Groups > [your username] and clicking on the Login Items tab.

Did you know that holding down the Alt key and repeatedly presssing the Tab key (the one above the Caps Lock key on most UK keyboards) allows you to cycle through all your windows? Alt + Shift + Tab will cycle backward. In macOS, the shortcut is Cmd + Tab (Cmd + Shift + Tab for reverse). This makes switching back and forth between running apps quick and painless.

Pressing Windows Key + L will lock your computer on Windows, leaving your open programs still running in the background ready for you. Just enter your password to resume where you left off. On macOS High Sierra and later, you use Cmd + Ctrl + Q.

Need to rename a group of files in the same way? On Windows, select all the files to rename and right-click on any of them, choose "Rename" from the menu, and type in the new name. This will rename all the files with that name and a numbered suffix: (1), (2), etc.

On the Mac, select the files you want to rename, right-click (or hold down Ctrl and click) the group, and choose "Rename [Number] Items" from the menu. Type in the new name, and the files will be renamed with a trailing number.

To delete the whole word on the left, you can type Ctrl + Backspace. To jump over words you can type Ctrl + Left-Arrow or Ctrl + Right-Arrow.

Usually on the Mac you just change Ctrl to Command, but in this case you need the Option key instead: Option + Backspace, Option + Left-Arrow, and so on.

To hide (but not close) all open windows, you can type the Windows key + D. Then you can press Win + D once to restore those now-minimized windows. On macOS, you can type Command + F3.

Did you know you can undo almost any action in Windows? You may already know that pressing Ctrl + Z will undo anything you've just typed, but this also applies to everything else. If you accidentally move or delete a file, hitting Ctrl + Z will bring it right back. If it turns out that you didn't need to undo after all, you can redo anything you've undone by pressing Ctrl + Y.

When you copy text, some programs will include any styling like bold, italics, colour, and so on. To paste without the styling, press Ctrl + Shift + V instead of the usual Ctrl + V (or on a Mac, Command + Shift + V). One exception: Notepad on Windows, which wants you to type Ctrl + Alt + V instead.

Forgot your WiFi password? In Windows, you can follow these steps to recover it. First, go to Network and Sharing Center. Next, right-click on the WiFi network connection. Choose "Wireless Properties". Click the "Security" tab; the password will show as a series of "bullet" characters. Click "Show Characters" and voilà, you'll be able to see the password text.

On a Mac, look in Keychain Access for your WiFi connection. Use the search bar if there are lots of entries. Double-click on it and click "Show Password."
