Students don't just learn from their tutors, textbooks and the gym. They learn from each other too.

They learn to debate, they develop their communication, and they develop personal skills, all of which are needed in the fitness industry.

It's an absolute joy to watch a group of strangers come out of their shells and develop themselves on our courses.

An older client being new to the gym does not necessarily mean they are new to movement.

They may be unfamiliar with a particular piece of equipment while bringing years of physical experience from work, sport, walking, cycling, gardening or everyday life.

A recent Our Future Health UK participant data provides a useful reality check. People aged 60–69 were the age group most likely to meet the physical activity guidelines, while those aged 70–79 reported the most moderate exercise.

The findings do not represent every older adult, but they challenge the assumption that older automatically means inactive or physically inexperienced.

Good Personal Training means exploring what the client can already do, what they want to maintain and what may affect their training, not automatically giving them the easiest option.

Age gives you context, not a programme.

Palpation is there to help!

Use it to gather information, but not to jump straight to a conclusion.

Be clear about what you’re checking for. Are you noticing differences in tissue tone, tenderness, texture or temperature? Compare what you find with the surrounding area or the opposite side. What feels different, and does it match what you’ve already found elsewhere in your assessment?

Keep talking to your client as you go. Ask what they’re feeling, where they feel it and whether anything feels different from side to side. Their answers and their body language give you another part of the picture.

Then bring everything together. Your consultation, postural assessment, ROM testing, functional assessments and palpation should all support one another. One finding on its own rarely tells you enough.

The aim is to build a clearer picture of what may be contributing to the client’s problem, record your findings properly, and use the evidence to help decide your treatment priorities and next steps.

If you’re looking at Personal Training courses, you’ll probably see providers talking about practical days, classroom days and face-to-face training.

But the number alone doesn’t tell you much.

What matters is what you’re actually doing during that time. Are you coaching? Practising consultations? Adapting exercises? Getting feedback when something doesn’t work?

That’s the kind of practical experience that helps turn knowledge into something you can actually use with a client.

So before enrolling, try asking:

“What will I actually be doing during the practical sessions?”

If the sales rep doesn't know ask to talk with a Tutor.

We’ve included another six useful questions in our latest guide to choosing a Personal Training course.

Our Summer Manchester courses are up and running too!

It never ceases to amaze us just how different everyone's backgrounds are when they come onto our courses, and honestly, that's a perfect melting pot for learning.

Personal Trainers and Sports Massage therapists will all have to meet and work with different people, with different experiences, levels of fitness, knowledge, capability and goals.

If you learn to work with different people throughout your training, you'll feel more confident and ready when you step into the industry.
