Epic challenging day for 15 young RN cadets, paddling Stoke Gabriel to Dartmouth and back. They planned the route and took turns leading and navigating, and learned about reading the elements and decision making on the water.
Saw the Britannia Royal Naval College including their Vahana craft on a training exercise , and Dartmouth Castle, pioneering military infrastructure at its time.
It was a windy day and a good demonstration in why we normally only go to Dartmouth on spring tides (this wasn’t!). Very tough paddling in the way back.

Proper bit of team building in some proper British weather.
Excellent day out for .
Paddle to the for pizza and a pint. Stop in the shore on the way back for a brew and a chat around the fire. Proper racing all the way back to Stoke Gabriel.
Terrific, up for it crew. What a laugh!

This week we had two fantastic days of River School Holiday Club on the water 🛶🍃🌳🔥

Our young participants had a great time canoeing to base camp, searching for seals, lighting fires, baking campfire stick bread and playing games on and off the water too! Lots of fun outside in nature together 🙌💚

This is the start of a summer filled with opportunities to send your kids (if they’re aged between 7-14) on trips like this with us through our River School programme. We are open for bookings NOW and HAF funded places are released on June 8th too for those who may qualify.

Our canoes have a very happy life here on the River Dart 🛶💚

Winding their way up and down the tidal estuary effortlessly. Our big canoes can take 12 guests in each, perfect for big family get togethers, school groups, parties, corporate events and stag/hen dos. Plus you get to experience scenery like this- I mean 😍

Yesterday was the funeral of Farmer Tom who owns Cornworthy Court Farm and the field where we run Riverschool and our overnight camps. He was laid to rest with his wife, Sue.

Cornworthy Church was standing room only, packed with farmers and shooters, and the Village Hall loaded with ‘healthy snacks’ afterwards!

He was born near Crediton and moved to the farm when he was 5. He went on honeymoon in Exmoor. Devon all his life apparently!

Interesting that we are a crew of (former) adventurers who between us have led people to the highest point of the Andes, across the Gobi desert and been down the Amazon several times, yet Tom’s stories of going little further than this valley all his life were far more interesting than any of ours!

He had tales of being sent down as a boy to catch flounder from the creek for the dining table, which he could do by wading out not that deep into the creek with a sharp stick. Can’t do that anymore!

He loved his South Devon cows which were what my Dad bred and I grew up around. He’s the last to still have them roaming right down to waters edge where they can take shade and cool down. And they can take the brackish water, unlike the modern continental breeds that gradually replaced our native breeds during Toms lifetime. They’re a lovely sight from the river, from our canoes.

So long Tom. Thanks for everything. You will be missed.
