Final push to get the rest of the tickets sold over next couple of weeks, then please return ticket stubs to me personally or pop in an envelope and leave at the bar by 15th August.

101 men took part in the 59th Stromness Open on Saturday the 1st August.

In the gross section club captain Ewan Mcdill topped the leaderboard with a one over par 66. 2 shots ahead of Andrew Groundwater and Graham Flett. Scoring was tight though with only 5 shots separating the top 10.

Ewan was also leading the nett section on 60 with Dod Sutherland a shot back on 61. Only 5 shots separated the top 10.

After an excellent lunch provided by the ladies section the players took to the course again for round 2. Sadly Ewan couldn't match his first round form and slipped back with a 77. Andrew and Graham also couldn't quite match their first round scores returning 72 and 70 respectively. The real fireworks were happening in the last group. Lee Findlay slashed his way through the field with a final round 62 to give him a 2 round total of 132 and this was good enough for him to retain his open championship. Graham Flett was in 2nd place.

Scoring was again tight in the nett section for the 2nd round with several players making moves. In the end it was Dod Sutherland who emerged victorious with a second round 66 to give him a 2 round total of 127. Martin Fleet rolled back the years to make a return to the winners podium by taking second place with 128, beating Ronnie Gray on countback.

A special mention for Ronnie who has recently turned 80. He managed to burst his age gross in the first round and matched it in the 2nd round. A special presentation was made to Ronnie to mark his 40 years of support to Stromness Golf Club.

Thanks also to our sponsors. Lost Orchard Cider once again very generously sponsored the main competition. To celebrate 80 years in business local electrical contractors RS Merriman very kindly sponsored cars for a hole in one on the 10th. Sadly these were not won. Thanks also to Keith Chalmers for providing the link from the 10th tee.

The final preparations are underway for tomorrow’s 59th Stromness Amateur Open sponsored by Lost Orchards. There is a fantastic display of prizes on offer and the newly refurbished Summer House is kitted out with Lost Orchards on tap for everyone to enjoy a free drink courtesy of the sponsor!

The Ladies Section will be doing Bacon Rolls, Tea and Coffee from 6am-10:30am - payment by cash only.

Please make sure you check in with the starter upstairs before heading to the tee.

Today is the last chance to enter our Ladies Open taking place this Sunday 2nd August!!

A seeded draw with the first groups out around 11:30 and a buffet available after your round, is included in the £20 entry fee.

This year there is the added chance of winning a car (see separate post for more info!) and as usual the Sponsor has put up a £100 cash prize for the first hole in one at the 8th! You’ve got to be in it to win it as they say! ⛳️

We can’t promise the weather for Saturday but we can promise there will be a Lost Orchard or two available!

There are still a few spaces left for the 59th Men’s Stromness Amateur Open, generously sponsored by Lost Orchards taking place this Saturday 1st August. Deadline for entries 6pm Thursday night.

The usual roast dinner is included in your entry fee, as well as the ever popular home bakes by the Ladies Section - so even if the golf isn’t good you will be well catered for, and of course an ice cold pint of cider courtesy of the sponsor is included for every participant 😉
