Stromness Sailing Club

Stromness Sailing Club Stromness Sailing Club is a friendly club based at Ness slip in the South end of Stromness harbour, close to Stromness Golf Club.

The membership of Stromness SC comprises a mixture of dinghy sailors who race during the summer season and others who sail just for fun. The main class of dinghy raced is the Snipe and around thirteen of them are based at the Club. Having a principal class ensures that there is good racing but other classes are also welcome and handicap racing can be provided. For more information about racing cli

ck on the Club Racing link on the Club web site. New Members are welcome and information about membership fees are given on the Membership page on the Club web site. If you do not have your own boat you might consider offering your services as crew. Some skippers have regular crews but others have to settle for picking up whoever is available or not sail at all. If you are not already experienced, crewing is a good way to learn the ropes and gain confidence in a boat. Building up a stable partnership between skipper and crew helps to improve competitiveness. Crews also have their own points series and the Club aims to offer one Crew Race each Thursday evening, weather permitting. Although Stromness SC is not itself a training establishment, several members are trained RYA Instructors and able to provide basic training for youngsters and to assist new members. A small group of youngsters is currently undergoing basic training in this way. For those who wish to progress to courses that lead to RYA certification, this can be arranged through Orkney SC in Kirkwall which is a recognised RYA Training Establishment.

6 of our sailors had a bit of fun on the water today! A few of them being last year's beginners, some of whom haven't managed to get into the racing circuit just yet, or are crew and are trying their hand at helming.
We are primarily a snipe class racing club, but we offer fun sailing to competent members who have either learnt to sail on our beginners course, or has learnt some place else.
Here's to a fun filled summer! ⛵️

Sail training weekend complete!
Our 5 students have spent 2 days on the water in Stromness, learning all the basics and can now happily take a dinghy out and sail independently!
The Instructors have been very impressed with their progress, and looking forward to seeing them improve further.

We were happy to gift Rousay Sailing Club 3 Toppers recently!
They have been putting a tremendous amount of work into their club, and are focused on getting folk of all ages into dinghies to enjoy the benefits of sailing!

This could only have happened due to getting funding a year ago ourselves, to purchase new dinghies here in Stromness for our beginners to learn on.
Recycling our old, but sailable Toppers is important, aswell as working together with other clubs who may be just starting out, to help benefit each other for the wider community.
we hope they get a lot of use over in Rousay.
