Portadown Rugby Football Club

Portadown Rugby Football Club Wednesday 4 September 1963 has gone down in the annals of Portadown Rugby Club’s history.

In February 1879, the Irish Rugby Football Union was formed, and listed Poratadown as an affiliated club, with Thomas John (TJ) Collen as the honorary secretary. Several hundred spectators turned up to see the local side take on Ulster in the first match on Chambers Park, the towns magnificent new playing fields on the Lurgan Road. 1979 saw the club celebrate it’s centenary year, and saw the elect

ion of international player, Charlie Murtagh as club captain. Onwards and upwards

Throughout the years, Portadown Rugby Club has remained a bastion of normality and civility through all the trying social and political circumstances, which have been a blemish on our society. Regardless of colour, race or creed, Portadown RFC has promoted friendship, fair play and competition among our players, local community and peers. It is our aim to continue to promote this spirit and strive for improvement long into the new millennium.

A Fantastic End to the School Rugby Season at Chambers Park!

Yesterday, Chambers Park played host to a fantastic end-of-season tag rugby festival, bringing together nine teams from local primary schools for a day packed with fun, teamwork and rugby.

Around 100 boys and girls took part, many of whom do not regularly play rugby, and it was fantastic to see so many young people enjoying the sport in such a positive environment. The enthusiasm, effort and enjoyment on display from every child made for a brilliant occasion.

The festival marked the culmination of a year’s work by Portadown RFC’s Schools Development Officer, Alistair Toal, who has spent the season delivering rugby coaching programmes across local primary schools. It was incredibly rewarding to see the progress made by so many players over the course of the year, with confidence, skills and teamwork all on full display.

The standard of rugby throughout the day was outstanding, with some excellent tag rugby played by all teams. More importantly, every player embraced the values of the game, showing respect, sportsmanship and a willingness to give their best.

A huge thank you to all the schools who attended and supported the event, and to every boy and girl who took part. Your enthusiasm and effort made the day a huge success.

Days like this showcase the strength of schools rugby in our area and the exciting future ahead for the next generation of players.

Well done everyone – a brilliant way to finish the season!

A Fantastic Day for Girls’ Rugby at Chambers Park!

Yesterday we were delighted to welcome girls from Killicomaine JHS and Tandragee JHS to Chambers Park for a brilliant end-of-season rugby event led by Men’s Head Coach Alistair Toal and Girls’ Youth Lead Coach Gail McCommisky.

The focus of the day was building confidence in contact rugby, developing skills, and having fun and the girls certainly delivered!

After a year of hard work and dedication, yesterday was a fantastic showcase of just how far these players have come. The confidence, teamwork, courage and rugby ability on display was outstanding. From strong carries and determined defence to brilliant support play and plenty of smiles, the girls were simply fantastic throughout.

Most importantly, they enjoyed themselves, backed each other up and showed exactly what girls’ rugby is all about.

A huge thank you to Killicomaine JHS and Tandragee JHS for attending and helping make the day such a success. The future of girls’ rugby in our area is incredibly bright, and we couldn’t be prouder of every player who took part.

Ulster Rugby Referee of the Year | Ross Whitfield

Everyone at Portadown RFC would like to extend their heartfelt congratulations to Ross Whitfield on being named Ulster Rugby Referee of the Year.

Ross is a familiar face around Chambers Park, having come through the club as a youth player before representing Portadown at senior level. Since taking up the whistle in late 2021, he has shown incredible dedication, commitment and professionalism, progressing rapidly through the refereeing pathway to become a regular official in Division 1A of the Energia All-Ireland League.

The 2025/26 season has been another outstanding one for Ross. A particular highlight was his appointment to represent both the USRFR and IRFU at the Rugby Europe Under-20 Championship in Prague, a prestigious tournament that showcased some of the best young talent in European rugby and reflected the high regard in which Ross is held within the game.

Coming from a proud Portadown rugby family, with his father Joe Whitfield having also represented the club at senior level, Ross continues to make both his family and club immensely proud with his achievements.

This award is thoroughly deserved and is recognition of the hard work, sacrifice and commitment Ross has shown throughout his refereeing journey. He is a fantastic ambassador for both Portadown RFC and Ulster Rugby, and an inspiration to the next generation of referees coming through the game.

Congratulations Ross, a brilliant achievement, and one we are all incredibly proud of!

1XV Vice Captain | Scott Craig

We are delighted to announce Scott Craig as the incoming 1XV Vice Captain for the season ahead!

A leader from the very beginning of his rugby journey, Scott captained youth teams to Ulster League and Cup success while attending Tandragee JHS, before continuing to make his mark at Portadown College, where he was proudly appointed School Captain in 2023.

Scott’s leadership, commitment, and determination have been evident throughout his career. Whether on the pitch, in the changing room, or around the club, he sets the standard for those around him and embodies everything Portadown RFC stands for.

As Vice Captain, Scott will play a key role alongside Club Captain Ben MacKinnon and the senior coaching team as we look ahead to an exciting season. His passion for the club, drive to succeed, and ability to inspire others make him the perfect choice for this important role.

Congratulations, Scott! A thoroughly deserved appointment, and one we know you’ll embrace with pride. The future is bright for this team, and we’re delighted to have you helping lead the way.
